During the Winter 1990 term, some Project Community students lead a crea- tive writing seminar at Cotton Correctional Facility in Jackson, Michigan. The following poem was written by one of the residents. Blanks Away Range! Blank, blank, blank That's all I could hear Blanking out the bad memories of my childhood years Blanking was easy, it brought me great joy But I wore out my blanking like I wore out my toy As I grew older it was harder to cope With no blanks to help me, I quickly found dope You talk about freedom, I had instant relief . Yes, the world I had entered could show me no grief I had no way of knowing, I had no way to tell That the drugs / was taking were my ticket to hell Could I stop using, by blanking away? There's no such luck, 'cause when you're using you pay And pay I did dearly, time after time Because my blanking to druggiW led me right into crime It cost me my freedom, my family, my life There's one who still suffers; l call her my wife She pays in the present for the mistakes of my past Yet she still stands beside me, and says our marriage will last I give up on the hard life, the darkness and pain I'm no longer blanking or using cocaine Each day I'm aware that's how it must be As I face what life hands me, I set myself free Project Community is a U-M service-learning course offering Sociology and Education credit with more than 40 field placements in Chemical Depend- ency, Criminal Justice, Education, Environmental Advocacy, and Health and Well-Being.
