Page 14 -The Michigan Daily - Friday, October 26, 1990 Runners hit Big 10's Men's team looks to dethrone Badgers by Jeff Lieberman Daily Sports Writer The big question for the Michi- gan men's cross country team is "whether or not the Wolverines, ranked ninth nationally, can knock off number-three Wisconsin at Sat- urday's Big Ten Championships. The Badgers have won the Big Ten Championships six years in a row. However, while some teams may run in awe of Wisconsin's re- cent dominance, Michigan seems well prepared for the challenge. "I think this is the first time in a number of years that Wisconsin will be presented with a legitimate chal- lenge," Michigan coach Ron Warhurst said. That competition will come from the Wolverines, Michigan State, and Illinois. "It would be nice if we (those three schools) could all wear the same jerseys and run against Wis- consin," Warhurst said jokingly. But it doesn't work that way. "I think in the past three or four weeks we've realized that there is a 4ossibility we could win the meet. But Wisconsin's not going to lay down and die." Perhaps the most important key to Michigan's success this weekend will be the performance of their number five through seven runners. Last Saturday, Warhurst sidelined his top four runners to get a better feel for whom he wanted running this weekend at Minnesota. "It didn't answer all my questions but it answered a lot of them," Warhurst said. "I just have to get a gut feeling for who I think is going to do the best job." Apparently Warhurst found that answer Tuesday in practice by choos- ing Dan Oden, Shawn MacKay and Matt Schroeder to run. Brad Barquist, Jeff Barnett, Tony Carna, and Matt Smith will round out the squad. "Whatever number men fourth, fifth and sixth are going to be, they have to win it for us," Warhurst said. "I'm just assuming that my top three - Barquist, Barnett, and Carna are going to run great." Without another scheduled meet for two weeks, there will be no looking past this one. "If we win the Big Ten's that will make our season regardless of what else happens," Carna said. "So nobody has looked beyond the Big Ten's." Women strive to capture second in strong field by Jim Foss Daily Sports Writer In recent years when people talked about the top two women's cross country teams in the Big Ten, Michigan was altogether absent from the conversation. However, this year the Wolverines may return to Ann Arbor with at least a second place finish. This weekend, the team travels to Minneapolis to compete in the Big Ten Championships. Ranked num- ber two in the nation, Indiana is the favorite. But behind the Hoosiers, the race seems to be wide open. "We have never gotten second be- fore - we've had a lot of third places," coach Sue Foster said. "However, the team is looking very good in practices and there's no rea- son we can't get second." The Big Ten meet will be held on the same course which hosted the Minnesota Invitational, where the Wolverines captured second place earlier this month. "Individually, I hope that the runners will run faster than they did before, with the top runners some- where in the high 17 (minute range)," Foster said. An important factor in the poten- tial success of the Michigan squad at the meet will be the performance of first-year runner Jennifer Armstrong, who has been recovering from a hip injury. Armstrong has not been able to run every day, but she has found other ways to maintain her fitness level. "Jen has been getting better," Foster said. "She has been riding a stationary bike, and using the Stair Master, and she may be in better shape now than before the injury." Foster is banking on the team's top runners, but also on the second pack. "We're hoping that Molly (McClimon), Jennifer (Armstrong), and Amy (Buchholz) will be in the top fifteen, if not the top ten," Fos- ter said. "But we would also like to have all (runners) in the top twenty." And in last night's undercard n.. No, this isn't a box-off to see who faces the winner of last night's Evander Holyfield/ James Buster Dougla bout. It is actually senior Kevin Taylor and junior Jeff Jacobs getting in some sparring practice. RESERVE OFFICERS' TRAINING CORPS 1 r r* r Need the hot news fast? Find it in the Daily.
