Heaton Daily Sports Writers Which Michigan athletic team has the best winning percentage on campus this fall? The Michigan women's soccer team does, as they improved their record to 17-4-3 yesterday, defeating Bowling Green, 3-0. The Wolverines played well from the onset and began the 2$cormg at 10:33 of the first half. enior forward Krista Towne drilled the ball past the outstreched hands of the Falcon's goalie. "Bowling Green came out a little sluggish," Towne said. "We took advantage of it, and we dlominated the first half." Lori Green, who scored four goals against Kent State University on Saturday, continued her scoring barrage at the 21:17 mark, putting the team up 2-0. At the 30:46 mark of the first half, sophomore forward Shannon Loper finished off the scoring for the Wolverines by depositing the ball into the back of the Bowling Green net. Michigan clamped team Falcons down their defense, and there was no more scoring the rest of the - game. The second half was not nearly exciting as the first, as the Wolverines concentrated on their fundamentals in preparation for the Big Ten Tournament next weekend. "We focused on team play and passing," senior sweeper Leslie Martin said. "You have to know how to play different styles. In the second half, we played our control game.", The game marked the return of starting goalie Jenny Saul from a four week lay-off due to a leg injury. She came back strong with a few diving saves, recording the shutout. "Jenny made some good saves and played well," Towne said. "It's nice to have her back, just in time for the Big Ten Tournament." Michigan will play at Grand Valley State University next Tuesday as its final tune-up for next weekends Big Ten Tournament at Illinois. UIC has inside track on series with icerf G WMM||M G Former Berenson disciples ...*,.'a u'. .,. lead Flames into Ann Arbor by Matt Rennie Daily Hockey Writer Punctuality must not be Larry Pedrie's strong suit. After all, he's a week late for homecoming. Pedrie, the first-year hockey coach at Illinois-Chicago, will not have to ask anyone for directions to Yost Arena during his stay in Ann Arbor this weekend. Pedrie knows his way to the old barn on State Street quite well, thanks to his three- year stay as an assistant to Michigan coach Red Berenson. Pedrie will not be the only Michigan connection on the Illinois- Chicago bench. Former Wolverines Billy Powers and Ryan Pardoski serve as the Flames' assistant coach and graduate assistant, respectively. Leaving nothing to chance, Pedrie even lured the former Michigan equipmentmanager Ron Dunn to the Windy City. Each of the former Wolverines may wish he was standing behind his old bench this weekend, given the current state of each team. The Flames, to be quite blunt, are strug- gling. The team has dropped all four games it has played this year, scoring only seven goals against its opponents 25. Meanwhile, the Wolverines sport a 3-1 record, lead the CCHA in goals scored, and boast the top two scorers in the league in junior right wing Denny Felsner and sophomore left wing David Roberts.. On paper, the series looks like a mismatch, but Berenson is more "I don't like playing teams that are looking for their first wins or are in a slump," Berenson said. "They're going to be desperate for a win. We'll have to have everything clicking." What has not been clicking so far for Berenson's squad has been the goaltending. Rookie Steve Shields and junior Tim Keough have alter- nated starts in the first two series this year, but Berenson is undecided as to who he will stick between the pipes this weekend. "I don't know who's going to start in goal," Berenson said. "It might be this way for a long time, I think we'll get better goaltending as the season goes on." Berenson has expressed soneO dissatisfaction with the 16 goals the Wolverines have given up this year Pedrie, though, would probably be thrilled to trade problems with Berenson. The Flames are in the pro- cess of renewing their lease on the CCHA cellar, but Pardoski expecIs to see an improved team take the ice tonight. "The situation here reminds me of when I was a freshman four years ago at Michigan," Pardoski sai. "Larry's trying to implement is style. It's a learning process, and we're already seeing improvement with every game." Junior cente, Rick Judson i§, the Flames' top returning scorer from last season. Senior, rightwing Dominic Dunlap and junior right- Pedrie wing Randy Zul-inick join Judson in pacing Illinois-Chicagols attack. But Pardoski feels his former team is also the formidable team. "They're a talented offensive * team, and they have a good defensive core," he said. "We'll have to play our best game to keep up with them." However, Berenson thinks that the Flames may have an advantage against the Wolverines that other teams do not possess. "They obviously know our teak better than any other coaching staff " 40 Berenson said of his former employ- ees. "We'll play them like we play any other talented team." Although several Wolverines sat out a practice this week, Berenson expects to have the entire roster at, his disposal. Felsner and rookie center Cam Stewart are fully rested after nursing minor injuries. = - V v Saturday, October 27 8pm-2am * East Quad $3 in adcanCe/$4 at the door 2iBands and aDJ Dirty Street Detour Skinflip Costume Contest * Horror Movie Marathon JOSE JUAREZJDaily Jim Ballantine hopes to have many checks like this one against UIC.
