Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Tuesday, October 23, 1990 Volleyball looks to keep momentum U B by Sarah Osburn Daily Sports Writer The question: Will the Michigan Volleyball team be able to keep its three game winning streak going? The answer: "It would be great for us to keep moving in the same direction," Michigan coach Peggy Bradley-Doppes said. "We showed maturity this weekend. We usually come out and take the lead then end up losing it. But this weekend we were able to play strong through Sunday. It would be really great to beat a team like Western. It would be really fun for me, I used to coach against (Western coach) Rob (Buck) in the MAC." The Wolverines (4-16 overall; 0- 8 in the Big Ten), take on Western Michigan (4-14; 3-3 in the MAC) tonight at 7:30 in Varsity Arena. A problem the volleyball team worries about is time. "We haven't done much to prepare for Western," Michigan assistant coach Jennifer Dhaenens said. "We try to keep them from looking ahead, so we really only have Monday to practice and get ready." In preparation for Western, the Wolverines will work on serving and returning serves, as well as defense. "Western has some great athletes. We need to pass well to win," Dhaenens said. The Broncos, usually at the top of the conference, are not having their typical year. "There is really no significance to this match," Buck said. "Both programs are struggling to keep their heads above water. For us, this is definitely a season of reorganization. We need to reinstitute a foundation for our program." However, Dhaenens disagrees. "We are really excited. We had a great weekend and we are excited to play Western. Another win would give us a lot of momentum to take into the second half of the Big Ten season." Associated Press Top 25 Team Last (First-place votes) Rec. Week 1. Virginia (45) 7-0-0 1 2. "We're banged up in a few spots," he said. "We may get a couple of of players back, but we've got to go with the guys we've got." The frustrated coach also suggested that those on the field must take charge and bring back the 'd' in defense. But Moeller does not see much concern for preparing his team for the remaining five games. He also does not feel the pressure that might be placed on him succeeding Schembechler as coach. "I know how to coach football," he said. "I'm not in any panic. INJURY UPDATE: Jon Vaughn will continue to practice on his sprained ankle this week as he did last week. "He wasn't terrible;" Moeller said. "He was trying, but the injury took away from some of his performance." To rest Vaughn, Moeller spells the nation's leading rusher with Allen Jefferson. Of his decision to use Jefferson in the second half, Moeller said he wanted the best player at that time in the game. Senior inside linebacker John Milligan resumed practicing yesterday, but it is not certain when the co-captain will return to the lineup after suffering a broken leg. @ Chris Hutchinson's status is days to-day with a pinched nerve in his back. "You can't put him out there if he doesn't have strength," Moeller said. And center Steve Everitt, nursing a broken foot, will probably begin practicing in two weeks. of the UGLi.
