Page 10 -The Michigan Daily -Thursday, October 18,1990 Blue rugby is 'rough, tough and intense' Blue seeks revenge against Falcon icers by Matt Ronnie by Andrew M. Kleiman Daily Sports Contributor Wounded, but still alive. Bleeding, but breathing. This may be the only way to de- scribe the all-undergraduate Michigan rugby team as they are a mere two weeks away from the Big Ten Tour- nament. Each team qualifies for the Big Ten Tournament, regardless of club league record. Coming off a 30-4 defeat at the hands of the Chicago Blaze last Sat- urday and an 0-2 straight elimination in the Michigan Cup in Midland two weeks ago, the team (3-4-1) plays Chicago's Southside Irish Collegiate Select-Sidedthis Saturday on Mitchell Field. The senior team (1- 1-1) will also compete against the Chicago team. "We will use this week, as well as the remaining league matches, to prepare for the all-encompassing Big Ten Tournament," said injured col- lege player and rugby president Pat Muscat. S"Thecollege is loaded with new, inexperienced players, but filled with raw talent," he continued. "We came" back in both matches in Midland, but we lacked the technical skills to take the victories." Despite inexperience, Muscat is confident these two weeks of matches and practice will put the Wolverines over the top. "We will challenge for the Big Ten Title on November 3. The U of M team should be a force to reckon that weekend," Muscat said. "Although Ohio State and MSU will be tough, we can beat every single team in the Big Ten."~ The league season, consisting of 9 or 10 club matches preceding the Big Ten Tournament, is not simply training formality for the all-under- graduate college team. "We go to win every weekend," Muscat concluded. "It's rough, tough and intense." Daily Hockey Writer The Michigan hockey team does not need any additional motivation for this week's series with Bowling Green. Nobody has to remind the Wolverines they stayed home while the Falcons received an NCAA tour- nament bid, despite the fact that Michigan beat Bowling Green, 5-4, in the consolation game of the CCHA playoffs. The Wolverines also remember the triple overtime game which gave the Falcons a two-games-to-one vic- tory in the opening series of the CCHA playoffs two years ago. And no one has to tell Michigan coach Red Berenson that his teams have never finished ahead of Bowling Green during his six-year tenure as the head man for the Wolverine hockey program. Last year, the Fal- cons took three out of the four meet- ings between the two clubs and edged the Wolverines for third-place in the CCHA. No, motivation will not be a problem for this series, which opens tonight at Bowling Green and re- sumes tomorrow night at Yost. The Wolverines have spent an entire summer with dreams or, more ap- CLASSIFIED ADS Every Thursday 6-9pm is propriately, nightmares, of Falcons dancing in their heads. 0 Bowling Green has been such a nemesis for the Wolverine icers that this rivalry takes a backseat only to Michigan State in terms of inten- sity. "This is definitely up there with our top rivalries," sophomore center Mark Ouimet said. "We were just telling ourselves when we were stretching (during practice) that they have got to be on our minds alp week long." Last week, Bowling Green opened the season by dropping two straight to Lake Superior State, 3-1 and 10-2. Meanwhile, the Wolver- ines swept Miami in two blowouts, but Berenson is still wary of the Falcons' potential despite the loss of defenseman Rob Blake and cent* Nelson Emerson to the NHL. "If you look at the record last year, they always seemed to bounce back after a tough weekend," Beren- son said. "We'll have our hands full. "Every series is a big series," he said. "We felt they didn't necessarily beat us on the ice last year. But last year is last year, and this year is this year." And no one has to tell that to th Wolverines.
