Page 8-The Michigan Daily-Wednesday, October 17,1990 Company builds on tradition _ by Jenie Dahlmann When anticipating the visit of the nations premier touring repertory troupe, The Acting Company, I think how lucky the students at the University are to have access to live, quality performances of the classics. I wonder, however, how long non- profit professional theater companies in America will be able to increase students' awareness and appreciation of theater. If cutbacks in the National Endowment of the Arts actually happen, troupes such as The Acting Company that thrive only on the donations of corporations, founda- tions and government agencies, may become extinct. It may seem a hope- less situation, but time has not run out yet. Students here at the Univer- sity have been granted the opportu- nity to see The Acting Company perform two of Shakespeare's clas- sics: The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Romeo and Juliet. The Acting Company was established in 1972 by John House- man initially as a repertory company of fourth-year Julliard students. Their ensemble method of working was started in English theater troupes like The Royal Shakespeare-Com- pany. The Acting Company has evolved as the American manifesta- tion of this approach and is the offi- cial touring arm of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. Not only does the company of- fer American actors the opportunity to hone their talents in a repertory setting, it also offers classes and demonstrations to high schools and colleges around the country. If cutbacks in the [NEA] actually happen, troupes such as The Acting Company... may become extinct. Thursday night the company will stage The Two Gentlemen of Verona reset in America's Old West. Shakespeare's comedy re- volves around two brothers in love with the same woman. The play is full of mistaken identity and mis- communications. Director Charles Newell says he sees this production as a "technicolor and comic recon- struction of America's Old West." Woman," which they manage to make even raunchier than the origi- nal (the accordian does it for me) without turning it into an Irish jig. Although I prefer the Rolling Stones version, it seems much more appro- priate now, especially after the big Wheelchair tour, to hear Shane MacGowan spit, "I just can't seem to drink you off my mind" instead of that guy with the lips who used to be half cool. - Mark Binelli Friday night's production of Romeo and Juliet has been reviewed as a sexy production full of physical teasing. What better way to tell the story of these famous star-crossed lovers. It is directed by Leon Rubin, former artistic director of the Bristol Old Vic and The Waterford Palace Theaters in England and now the chairman of the drama division at the largest University level theater in the United Kingdom. It is sad to think the experience of live theater may be replaced by VCRs playing tapes of English actors performing Shakespeare thou- sands of miles away in England - where they happen to have govern- ment support for the arts. Taking into consideration the unpredictable future and flawless track-record of The Acting Company, The Two Gentlemen of Verona and Romeo and Juliet should not be missed. r S 1 The Acting Company will perform TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA tomorrow night at 8 p.m. and ROMEO AND JULIET on Friday at 8 p.m. in the Michigan Theater. Tickets are $26.50, $9 for student rush tickets with I.D. Yee-hahl Shakespeare hits the Old West as the American Acting Company stages Two Gentlemen of Verona in a slightly different format ~ead RECORDS Continued from page 5 The band members play every instrument under the sun, five out of eight of them wrote songs on the last album, four sang, and if one member was to, say, pass out in the middle of a concert, the others could easily step in and finish the show. The Pogbes are truly a total musical collaboration, and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah ep, a re-release of the single of the same name from a couple of years ago along with two new covers and an original, is aural proof of just that. The title song is exactly what it sounds like, a classically obnoxious Pogues tribute to mindless pop-rock love songs, one which begins not with a line about pubs or Pontch or puking or death, but instead, "I loved you, baby, since we were in school/I didn't show it/I was a fool." And check out this chorus: "Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah/Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah/Woo woo hoo hoo/Woo woo boo hoo." Two of the -other songs on the album, done with Irish folk band and major influence of the Dubliners, are more vintage Pogues, most notably the traditional "Whiskey In A Jar". And going along with the Yeah theme of Big Dumb Rock 'N' Roll Is their cover of "Honkytonk DAILY CLASSIFIEDS .lB WE WANT YOU If you think you have just what it takes tobe amember of the Guy Hollerin team.
