The Wolverines travel to East Lansing this weekend to compete in the Michigan Intercollegiate Championships. The meet brings together the Division I schools in Michigan in a battle for state brag- ging rights. Fresh off their second-place finish at the Minnesota Invitational, the team is considered the favorite to capture the title. "There's no doubt that they (State) are the best team we will face," coach Ron Warhurst said. "But we are fit and ready to run and should win the meet," he added. Beside the competition itself, coach Warhurst has other concerns heading into the meet. "We need to find out who is going to be our fifth man. This is a key in our success later this year. Hopefully, that man will assert himself this week." The fifth man, will be the most consis- tent point scorer behind the four lead runners. by DavidsSchechter Daily Sports Writer Drobitch out. Horrigan out. Lang out. In all, five Wolverines are injured for this weekend's Big Ten series against Iowa and Minnesota. "It's funny, coaches call me and say, 'We're struggling, we just had a player go out for the season.' And I'm giggling, thinking 'my gosh, we have five players out for the season,' Michigan coach Peg Bradley-Doppes said. "I'm playing three freshman at all. times, usually four. (I say to them) don't tell me your problems. But the good thing is we are getting better. In fourteen games this season, Michigan has won once. The Wolverines play Iowa tonight at 7:30 in Varsity Arena and against Minnesota Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The Wolverines are not patiently awaiting victory though. "We're still working on very basic basic funda- mental skills. It's just gonna take a lot of repetition before we become fairly competitive," Bradley-Doppes said. But can they be successful with five players out? "I truly feel if we have six disci- plined players, we're competitive. We don't need fifteen. So it makes the kids a lot more accountable," Bradley-Doppes said. Women run for top ten slot by Jim Foss by Rod Loewenthal Daily Sports Writer After garnishing their eighth and ninth victories of the season last weekend against James Madison and St. Louis, the women's field hockey team is looking for number ten and more this weekend. The Wolverines (9-3-1) travel to Ohio State on Friday and William and Mary on Saturday. Although a lackluster performer this season, the Buckeyes (4-6-1) could pose some problems according to Michigan as- sistant coach Meri Dembrow. "On any given day, Ohio State can be a good team. We can't afford to take anyone lightly." William and Mary will provide a challenge as they are ranked No. 17 nationally. William and Mary is a strong team, much like North- western who has already beaten the Wolverines twice this season. As one of her goals for this weekend, coach Patty Smith would like to see her team play more con- sistently against lesser opponents. "We've played our best games against better teams and our worst 0 Hoover Daily Sports Writer A No. 11 national ranking does not guarantee the Michigan women's cross country team a berth in the NCAA Championships. To receive an at large bid to race in Knoxville, Tennessee, the site of this year's NCAA's, has been the season long goal of the team. The squad travels to East Lansing this weekend to compete in the Michigan Intercollegiates. The ten- team field will include squads from all over Michigan: Michigan State, Central Michigan, and Western Michigan. Coming off of a strong perfor- mance in the Minnesota Invitational last weekend, coach Sue Foster is looking at this weekend's meet very aggressively. "As a team, our goal is definitely to win," she said. "We're that strong."~ The field in this meet is not as strong as others Michigan has faced this year. "Our biggest competition will be Central (Michigan)," Foster said. "But we should win this meet." "We kind of play up and down,,' agreed first-year goalie Niki Hoove "This weekend we want to play our game." Following in the style she set last weekend, Smith is intent on continually rotating her players in an effort to decrease fatigue. "We're going to stick with a large group of people playing," said assistant coach Meri Dembrow. tmnt -.
