T he Irish Mafia is a lot different
from the Italian Mafia.
Member of the Catso Family:
"Eh, where the fuck is my fuckin'
gun, you fuck?" (grunts and orders
another helping of vermicelli).
Member of the Maclntyre Fam-
ily: "Eh, where the fuck is my
fuckin' gun, you fuck?" (grunts and
orders another pitcher of Guinness).
Anyway, State of Grace is a'
brand new film about Irish mobsters
in New York City's Hell's Kitchen.
Sean Penn puts in a typically in-
tense performance as Terry Noonan,
a good Catholic boy who returns to
his childhood neighborhood after ten
years to join a violent gang, loosely
based on the Westies, a real gang
from that area. He eventually meets
up with his old pal Jackie Flannery,
a self-destructive, heavy-drinking so-
ciopath played by Gary Oldman,
Whom you might remember as a
self-destructive, intravenous drug-us-
ing sociopath in Sid and Nancy.
Jackie's brother Frankie, played by a
brooding Ed Harris (the hero in The
Abyss), is. the new gangleader, torn
between loyalty to his family and

the pressure that comes from their
new alliance with the Italians.
All three actors are excellent in
their psychologically gripping roles,
especially Oldman as the coiled
spring. The supporting cast is also
impressive, featuring John Turturro
(the racist son, Pino, from Do the
Right Thing), newcomer Joe

Viterelli as the intimidating Italian
boss and a brief appearance by
Burgess "the Feathered Fiend"
Meredith.
