Pat Riley inventedi it after his Los Angeles LakersI won their second consecutiveI NBA title over the Pistons in 1988. Three-peat.: But despite the youthful years of a word probably unheard of in most other English speakingl countries, the entire Wolverine football team can give you a definition of the word and explain its significance. The answer won't mention the Detroit Pistons' chances at a three-peat. Only Michigan's. No team has ever three-peated in the Big Ten as outright conference champions. No one. Now, Michigan sits with two outright titles under their belt, and licking their chops for a third under new coach Gary Moeller. "It really means a lot," explained tailback Jon Vaughn. "One, this is Michigan and Michigan will do it first. "It's also exciting. Everyone likes to win. That's the pedestal the country has put us on: to win three Big Ten championships. "It's also a quest. But it's also an obligation to ourselves to reach that plateau that no one else has done. Just to be a part of it is so overwhelming. We were talking about it all summer." Since the Wolverines went to the Rose Bowl last year, they must win the title outright again. And to return to Pasadena, they must do it with a new coach, a new quarterback, a new running back, new wide receivers, and a new tight end. With the exception of fullback Jarrod Bunch, no Michigan player who touches the ball will have starting experience under his belt. "Our biggest challenge is that Bunch is the only guy coming back who will handle the ball," Moeller said. We can't make that crucial mistake - whether it's dropping the ball or not blocking for the quarterback that leads to a negative or a turnover for our team. However, Moeller is confident that Elvis will be able to do the job. Grbac led the Wolverines last year in the early part of the season to four wins after senior Michael Taylor was forced out with an arm injury midway through the Notre Dame game. Grbac offers Michigan a stronger arm than Taylor possessed but does not present the option and running threat that made Taylor a success. "The one thing I like about Elvis is that he'll sit in there until the last second to throw the ball and take one in the face if he has to. I think he's that type of a player," Moeller said. However, Moeller is concerned about Grbac's ability to throw after moving out of the pocket in a scramble. Grbac emulates the style Moeller envisions for the future of Michigan football, while Taylor may have been the prototype Bo Schembechler quarterback. Moeller does not want to rely on the "bang the ball down the other team's throats" philosophy that Schembechler employed during his years at Michigan. With the change of style, some have nicknamed the new coach "Air Mo." "I would rather throw the ball than run a lot of option, personally, but I think you have to go with what the ability of your quarterback can do," Moeller said. "I like to throw the ball. Look at the Michigan program - go back ten years and you have a Johnny Wrangler- type quarterback, go back five years and you have a Jimmy Harbaugh-type quarterback. That's what I see." The Wolverines have lost two of Grbac's backups. Wilbur Odom was an academic casualty and Doug Musgrave left the school after a few days of fall practice. Ken Sollom, who fought with Odom for the backup role, will be Grbac's substitute. Running back remains a major concern. Michigan has lost its big play threat with the loss of Tony-Boles. The loss is even more decimating with the early entry into the professional ranks of Leroy Hoard. Boles will not return this year because of slow rehabilitation on his injured knee and did not register for spring or summer classes, which were needed for him to retain his eligibility. "We were thinking: someone is going to have to make the big play at Notre Dame," said Vaughn, one of the candidates to fill Boles' position. "We really do miss Tony because he was a big play back, but now we have five or six people who once given the chance like Allen, Dennis (Washington), me, Derrick Alexander, Desmond Howard, Bunch (can do the job). I think Bunch can go 60 or more on a good day, you never know. I think Tony's experience is what we're going to miss, but the big play isn't going to be missed." The tailback position will be filled with two veterans, who have not seen much game action.
