The former Michigan football coach created quite a stir this summer when the paperback edition of his best selling "Bo" was released. It contained an additional chapter from last year's released hardback version. Schembechler claimed Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany had a vendetta against him for an unknown reason and could have cared less if the Big Ten representative won the Rose Bowl. In addition, he said Delany prejudiced officials before Michigan's conference showdown last year against Illinois. While Schembechler criticized the officiating crew for attending the Rose Bowl parade, citing that they had to wake up around 5 a.m. to attend, he was most upset about the famous and infamous fourth down holding call that ended Michigan's Rose Bowl hopes. On fourth down and the scored tied 10-10 in the fourth quarter, punter Chris Stapleton ran to his left on a fake punt, taking the ball from the Wol-verines 46-yard line to Southern Cal's 30. In a controversial call, the wing official called holding, negating Stapleton's run. Schembechler said he was told the official's call was "premeditated." Shortly after, Schembechler was hit with an unsportsmanlike conduct call, giving the Trojans excellent field position in what turned out to be their drive toward the winning touchdown. Bo wrote: "I honestly believe that (Delany) was just as happy that Michigan lost that Rose Bowl....This Delany is bad news, and people should know it." Schembechler, who cowrote his autobiography with Detroit Free Press columnist Mitch Albom, said that one month after the Rose Bowl, he received a telephone call from Gene Calhoun, the supervisor of officials for the Big Ten. Calhoun said he was resigning his position because of Delany. Schembechler then repeated what Calhoun said to him. "'First of all, after the Rose Bowl, he (Delany) wanted me to come' out and say the game was well officiated and the call on the fake punt was correct,' Calhoun told Schembechler. "'He wanted me to say you had no reason to protest it. I didn't say a word, Bo. You know my policy is not to comment on any play after the game. "'But between you and me, that call was premeditated. It was the rottenest call I've ever seen. You were right to complain.'" Calhoun went on to tell Schembechler that in a meeting before the game, the officials talked of not letting Schembechler "get away" with intimidation tactics and at a postgame party the officials constantly said, "Bo got what was coming to him" *Delany called Calhoun before Michigan's trip to Champaign to face the Fighting Illini. Delany mentioned that the game was a "big game." Calhoun said this was wrong because to an official, no game can be more important than another. Delany told Calhoun to watch certain Illinois players for holding and playing "overaggressive." He then said he wanted Michigan's coaches held to the rules and to throw a flag immediately when Schembechler stepped out of the coaching box. "Bo, he was trying to mind-set us. You can't do that to the officials," Calhoun said. The book went on sale in mid-August and sells for $5.95. No percentage of the profits go to the Big Ten or the Jim Delany Scholarship Fund. Predicting Mo' s first ,year Time for football season. And with football season comes predictions. But as I sit with my crystal ball in front of me, the images and shapes are so vivid and in color, these can no longer be called predictions. Simply put, this is the truth. WEEK NUMBER 1: AT NOTRE DAME Gary Moeller is nervous. He starts his career with a prime time audience watching his every Gill move. He pays attention to detail. He figures the Wolverines will be safe and receive a good night's sleep at a monastery - something not foreign to Notre Dame. Little does he figure that the local nuns also use it for singing practice. With Sunday soon to arrive, the nuns go on a 24 hour practice session of the inspiring tune, Ave Maria. The Wolverines do not sleep. They think they have a new fight song. Moeller is worried. Lou Holtz's band of choir boys spend a reckless night on the town. Michigan wins on a Hail Mary pass with no time on the clock. "We had the Catholics on our side this time," Moeller proclaims, mentioning their night of divine revelation through song. Holtz fumes at the comment. "The steroid makers must be Protestant," he retaliates. "The Luck of the Roids didn't come through." WEEK 2: UCLA Moeller, who seems to have a few superstitions, brings the team back to the Notre Dame monastery they stayed at the week before in hopes of again being serenaded. But early Saturday morning, as the team heads back toward Michigan Stadium for the game, they are met by a violent snowstorm. The Wolverines miss kickoff and forfeit the game. "Son, this is Michigan weather" Bo Schembechler tells a tearful Moeller, who couldn't believe snow would occur in September. Meanwhile, fans burn a doll resembling Moeller in the Diag at noon the following Monday. WEEK 3: MARYLAND No surprises here. Michigan concedes an opening drive touchdown to Maryland, then route the Terps, 42-7. "Bo only beat them 41-21 last year," a now insecure Moeller points out. WEEK 4: AT WISCONSIN To prove his coaching ability, Moeller lets the entire squad have the week off and names hockey coach Red Berenson as his defensive coordinator and basketball coach Steve Fisher as his offensive coordinator. Mo then assembles a squad made up of the club soccer, water polo, and crew teams to play the Badgers. That's the women's club soccer, water polo and crew teams. The Wolverines romp 56-0.
