Huston had wanted to do this film for decades, and the result is a moving and atmospheric finale to his incredible career. Mo's time. So erase the memories of the past. Erase the memories of the dynasty that served Michigan so well for two decades. Forget Moeller's debacle at Illinois. Players claim that Moeller is tremendously excited about his new job. Moeller doesn't deny it. All summer long, the calendar had the day September 15 circled on it. Michigan versus Notre Dame. The start of the Moeller era. Yet, there were so many pages to be torn off the calendar until that day could arrive. But that meant there was time to prepare. Tloe VCR and tapes went along with Moeller to a cottage up north. He used the time to prepare - and shape everything just right. Soon August rolled around. The rookies reported. This is what coaching is all about. Football time. Then the veterans reported. They found Moeller bursting with enthusiasm. He gave them a speech the night they arrived that some claimed had them ready to go out and play Notre Dame right then - without delay. They could sense his zest. Bring on Notre Dame. Start the Mo era - although questions remain about who will step in to fill key positions. Moeller: more substance than style "It's a whole different atmosphere. If he had a choice, he'd go down tomorrow and play. There's so much excitement, they just want to go out and play," said free safety Vada Murray earlier this week. Tomorrow is Moeller's day. His time has come. "How am I going to be compared to Bo on game day? Hell, I don't know, I haven't been out there in a long time. I'll find that out on game day," Moeller s'id. Well, game day is here. The long wait is over. For Michigan football and Mo, tomorrow has finally come. 9- A MICHIGAN TRADITION SINCE 1915 ,#fcIot hfi4 v ' ' ' "0"'?' !7" ยข.. ' 'm ' " ''a, Vv 4. Throughout the 20-year career of Bo Schembechler, Michigan's offense has often been described as boring. Three yards and a cloud of dust, they said. But nobody ever claimed that Bo was boring. Maybe the press had been spoiled by Schembechler's off- the-cuff, say-what-you-want manner and his blunt sense of humor. Gary Moeller's media debut at the Big Ten meetings held in Chicago in late July did not receive rave reviews. Don't get the wrong idea. Moeller was clean shaven. He was well behaved. He wasn't tanked. He spoke well. It just seems he wasn't too exciting. Each coach spoke to the assembled press for 15 minutes about the upcoming season. The following day, Chicago Sun Times columnist Terry Boers rated each of their performances. The coaches assessed Michigan as the team to beat, but Moeller found himself beaten for entertainment value by half his colleagues and in a tie for sixth with Northwestern's Francis Peay. Boers wrote of Moeller: "Michigan's Moeller is about as much fun as a root canal." Yikes. Wisconsin's Barry Alvarez, Purdue's Fred Akers and Illinois' John Mackovic rounded out the poll, tying for last. Boers wrote of Alvarez: "After listening to Alvarez ramble on, you want to be measured for your own coffin." So congrats, Gary. After all, what's worse? A trip to the dentist, or a trip six feet under? Vada on Mo Free safety Vada Murray speaks of the changes between Bo and Mo, as well as the type of coach Gary Moeller has turned out to be. "With Bo, you knew Bro was going to run the ball. Coach Moeller says if the (opposing) team shows they want us to throw the ball, we'll throw, if they want us to run the ball we'll run. We aren't scared to throw the ball, we aren't scared to run the ball. "The only way I can describe it is that with Mo around, he's just a very relaxed coach. I think the players feel a lot rore relaxed. I personally feel a lot more relaxed. He's a coach where you can go to his office and not be afraid to say something. I'm not saying Bo was that type of person, but I think the majority of these players today feel a lot more comfortable, and when you feel confident about yourself, you play better. The players are a lot more relaxed in practice. In practice, Mo's walking around watching everyone practice and he's trying to catch punts and kick punts. The players will be cracking jokes, talking to him, but at the same time, he is the disciplinarian that he is. He wants players more vocal and to be more in charge of practice. The intensity level is just as high or higher because I think (the team) likes to go out and practice."
