Every football Saturday in Ann Arbor they become one swarming, living mass of spirit. They cheer for their Wolverines in every conceivable manner. They yell, do the wave, row, pop up inter- *ittently, shake keys, scream obscenities, throw marshmallows, and have even been known to throw each other. They wear maize and blue, and mock those who don't. They eat Dominos Pizza and drink Absopure water. It only happens at Michigan Stadium. There is an aura that surrounds thus ominous structure that seems to ;~tract all who pass through Ann Arbor, visitors -and students alike. Ies not hard to understand why. :For many, Michigan football is the most identifiable part of the university. For these people, Michigan Stadium is on the top of the "Must Visit" list. That first trip is one of those rare experiences that is never forgotten. It goes something like this... - While walking up to the stadium, looking down, taking a step back as the butterflies start to enter your well as a deep breath. You finally sit stomach. It's been on T.V. a million down and look at Michigan Stadium, times and now you're standing in its its awesome spectacle and all that it Michigan football lives in the shadows of that huge bowl and similarly so does a part of the university, a part of the students and a part of anyone who has ever witnessed a Michigan football game. You sit in the stadium alone. No national anthem. No fans. Yet you can hear it all. You can't help but imagine being down on the field giving your all like the maize and blue on football Saturdays. You can't wait to come back for a home game. The time is finally here. The time to take part in Michigan's greatest party. The time to hear the band and sing "The Victors" with over one hundred thousand others. The time to watch and cheer as the Michigan Wolverines race on the field and leap to slap the "M GO BLUE" banner. When sitting there alone, Michigan Stadium can mean so much. It can bring back memories, cause one to dream, and even make one shiver a bit. But now...now it's football season. 'MI' men's rugby starts league play by Jeni Durst Daily Sports Writer As many Michigan teams jump into league play, the men's rugby club kickoff their equivalent of Big Ten action this weekend. The club will face a mixed squad of the University of Detroit and the Michigan School of Business. But this match will serve only as a warmup for the beginning of senior league play, which starts immediately after with a game against Cincinnati University. This match against league rival Cincinnati will serve as a telltale marker for the entire season. "If we lose this one we'll have a bad start on the season and be deep in the hole," Michigan Coach Tanny said. "It's not one of our toughest, but it's one of the most important." Cincinnati has beaten the Wolverines three straight years, but the young squad has put in extra practice this week in preparation for the game. "We have a goal to win the senior league this year and a win over Cincinnati is a step in the right direction," Tanny said. "We have a bigger commitment to win this year." Another important factor will also be evident this weekend. The match will serve as a proving ground for the young and inexperienced squad, a weakness that has held them back in previous years. "This match will be important because it will show the improvement of our younger players," Tanny said. "Our youth is one of the reasons Cincinnati has beaten us the last few years." The match against the combined squads will begin at 1:00 p.m. at Mitchell Field and will be followed immediately by the Cincinnati game. As you approach the gate your pace quickens, only to see it locked and feel your heart sink. Then it's all the way around to the other side, through the open gate near Crisler (which you don't even give a second look) and into the stadium. Immediately you find yourself means. The entire event begins to sink in. Michigan Stadium is so much more than a stadium. It's "The Victors," and Michigan versus Ohio State. It's the fans and the cameras and Schembechler, Harbaugh, Woolfolk, Carter, Leach, and all the legends before them. 'Wildcats invade Tartan Turf by James Burgess Daily Sports Writer "I don't know one thing about *ichigan." And that could prove to be the strongest weapon the Wolverine stickers have when power house Northwestern (3-1-1) pays a call Saturday. New head coach Marrissa Didio, although having inherited a team which has never lost to Michigan, is still busy familiarizing herself with the hand she's been "I wouldn't predict anything; I have no expectations. We're just preparing our own team." Such reservation in the Wildcat camp would seem to be quite encouraging to Michigan coach Patti Smith, whose team is off to a 3-1 start. But as traditional 'pregame hype' dictates, Smith is guarded. "We definitely feel that we're the underdogs and we're comfortable with that. I think that does motivate us more in this type of contest." 'Underdog' is a word that fits well; Michigan was thrashed during their last meeting, 4-0-the Wolverines' worst defeat of 1989. To change the outcome this time around, Smith and her crew will have to capitalize on a rare weak link in Northwestern's chain-goal keeping. "They have freshmen goal keepers," cites Smith, "so anything can happen." Michigan will protect the net with two first year goalies of their own in Nicole Hoover and Natasha Bach. So far, the duo has allowed only 3 goals in 4 games. Another important factor in the match will be Michigan's seniors- or lack thereof. Though only 3 players are in their final year, 2 are defenders, and this could bring the team that much closer to a reversal of last season's rout. Despite their domination of the series, Northwestern is not without incentive. The Wildcats are defending a 10-0 record and conference title from last year's debut of the Midwest Collegiate Field Hockey Conference.
