Senate commences Souter confirmation hearings today WASHINGTON (AP) - After weeks of researching the opinions of Supreme Court nominee David Souter, the Senate confronts him to- day in order to flesh out a portrait that, so far, is little more than an outline. The confirmation process facing Souter fits the legal definition of a discovery: "the disclosure or coming to light of what was previously hid- den." In Souter's case, what has been hidden is not the facts of his life and lifestyle, but his judicial philoso- phy. Yesterday, the eve of the Sen- ate Judiciary Committee hearings, a host of special interest groups called news conferences to present what they know of Souter the Judge. The and a m nominee, incidentally, had lunch mother3 yesterday at the White House with ment ho President George Bush, and, as Sinc always, declined to take any July 23 questions. alike ha The known Souter is a bachelor, cess, for 51 years old next Monday, whose re- laws an sume glitters with a Harvard law de- Lib gree and a Rhodes scholarship. RED THE .DAILY CLASSIFIEDS LANSING (AP) - Worried that Michigan is becoming a haven for suicide after two widely publicized cases, a lawmaker said yesterday he will sponsor a bill that would make it a felony to help people kill them- selves. The bill was prompted by the recent cases of a terminally ill California woman whose husband is charged with helping her kill herself in a Detroit-area hotel and an Oregon woman who came to Michigan to use a Royal Oak doctor's machine. "Myself and others are very, very concerned about Michigan continuing to be considered some type of suicide haven," said Sen Fred Dillingham, (R-Fowlerville). "We've had these examples of people traveling thousands of miles to reach what is considered to be the safe state of Michigan to perform assisted suicides. I think that is certainly a very black eye on Michigan nationally," he said. His legislation would make it illegal to help someone commit or attempt to commit suicide. It would carry a maximum penalty of four years in prison and a $2,000 fine. Michigan currently has no law that addresses assisted suicide. The' Michigan Court of Appeals has ruled it isn't covered by murder laws. &. c 7b el bes The t view of the game is from MLB 3. Read Kickoff 1990. It's the perfect ticket to the football season.
