CBS aces weekend coverage

by Jeff Lieberman
Daily Sports Contributor
The U.S. Open topped off a busy
weekend for television sports. CBS
had been covering the tournament for
most of the past two weeks, and
several changes appeared evident.
One change this year was the ab-
sence of Brent Musberger as the an-
chor for CBS' coverage of the Open.
Tim Ryan was handed the reins this
year, with Lesley Visser and John
Dockery roaming the grounds. They
supplied us with up-to-the-minute
reports on current matches or small

features on some of the lesser known
players in the tournament.
CBS started out the coverage on
an up note before even broadcasting
a match. Its nightly wrap-up show at
11:30 p.m. for the first few nights
of play caught everyone up on the
happenings on and off the court.
Ryan did a smooth job and made it
through the half-hour show along
with co-hosts Mary Carrilo and
Visser with no major catastrophes.
The coverage for "Super Satur-
day" was not great, but worthy of
some mention. For one thing give

credit to commentators Pat Summer-
all, Tony Trabert, and Carillo for not
dozing off throughout the long after-
noon, in which they covered three
matches. Sure they made a few
ridiculous comments here and there.
And their analogies were a bit far
stretched at times, but its very easy
for us to criticize them when we
heard their voices for the entire after-
noon.
* And now a few idle thoughts......
How upset do you think CBS
was when John McEnroe lost in the
semifinals to eventual champ Pete
Sampras? Just think about how

many more viewers they would have
had for an Agassi-McEnroe final.
On the other hand, how happy do
you think they were that McEnroe
held back some and didn't lash out
and swear at chair umpire Peter Ull-
rich while every word was being
picked up by the microphone? Give
CBS some credit though for being
bold enough and having faith in
McEnroe to show his outbursts live
without covering up any sound.
Watching that may have been the
highlight of the tournament.
This weekend, of course also saw
the start of the NFL's season, with
both CBS and NBC going after large
audiences for their pre-game shows.
CBS has an all new team led by
Greg Gumbel and his co-host Terry

Bradshaw. These two did a fine job
but I missed hearing Brent Mus-
berger's voice with the immortal
words "You are looking live at...."
Something else to get used to is
seeing Will McDonough on NBC's
NFL Live. With Costas alone, NBC
has a huge edge over CBS, but steal-
ing McDonough away from CBS
helps even more.....
One knock on NBC's coverage on
Sunday concerns their updates, usu-
ally far better than the other net-
works. Apparently though after NBC
lost its baseball game of the week to
CBS this year, it has decided not to
show any scores from the majors.
CBS, on the other hand, did an ad-
mirable job of keeping its viewers
up to date throughout the weekend
on both baseball and football scores. McEnroe
