Really. First they destroyed Valparaiso University on Saturday, 8-0. Then on Sunday, Michigan won its Big Ten opener against Purdue, 4-2. The Wolverines (3-0) didn't have any trouble scoring against Valparaiso. Forward-striker Molly Douma chipped the first goal into the net. The senior ended up with two points for the match, along with first-year student Lisa Ashton. Other scorers included Lori Green, Crista Towne, Heather Marshall, and Anne Scullen. Michigan's defense was just as solid as the offense. "Our defense was the key," halfback Maureen Scullen said. "Especially Leslie Martin, she anchored the defense for us." The contest in Purdue was a little tougher. The team suffered from a brief bout with the flu Saturday night, and no one was too eager to take on the Boilermakers after driving four hours to West Lafayette. The first half was a struggle for the Wolverines, but Towne came through again to score the first goal of the game. Mid-way through the first half, the team seemed to revive itself as goals came from Marshall and each of the Scullen sisters. The team has excelled even without a true goalie. "We've been using several fielders as goalies," Maureen said. "We are still trying to find one on campus. It's a credit to our defense that we are doing so well without one." The Wolverines only allowed two goals over the weekend, and one of those was on a penalty kick. "Penalty kicks really don't count. They're cheap," Maureen added. Michigan will stay home for awhile. The team will take on Schoolcraft College this afternoon at 5 p.m. Then on Friday the Wolverines will face tougher competition from Big Ten rival Minnesota, before hosting Penn State on Sunday. All home games will be played at Mitchell field. by Dan Zoch Daily Sports Writer Early leads turned sour proved to be the plight of the Michigan women's volleyball team last night as the Eastern Michigan Hurons swept the Wolverines, 15-9, 15-10, 15-6. In each of the three contests, the team held two-point advantages before the Hurons rallied and strode past them. "I can't say I'm disappointed with the girl's performance because we saw some great plays," first-year Michigan coach Peggy Bradley- Doppes said. "I am disappointed by consistency. There's nothing I can do that will change that. Only court time - experience, can do that." The squad did boast some very bright spots, however. Senior Julia Sturm and first-year standout Fiona Davidson dealt three outstanding blocks that resulted in a Michigan drive late in the second game. The culmination of the short-lived Wolverine rally came when sopho- more Hayley Lorenzen posted a kill to bring the Wolverines to 10-13. "They are working hard. They are trying to play a very disciplined kind of game. It's just because they don't know each other their capabilities," Bradley-Doppes said. ' Michigan took an early 3-0 lead in the third game but collapsed under the teamwork of the EMU squad. The squad took a time out when Eastern scored it's thirteenth point, but could not recuperate in time to stop the Hurons. "They still play a little scared at times and they're not scared because of the opponent," Bradley-Doppes said. "They're scared because they'r freshmen and they don't want 0 make a mistake. We're not even looking at the opponent yet because we're worried about us right now." The greatest problem facing the Wolverines recently concerns the re- covery of Senior Tarnisha Thomp- son who has been plagued with lig- ament tears in her ankle. She ;ias just been allowed to practice with the team and should be back for tO debut of the Big Ten season on September 21 at Northwestern. , "We're very, very young. When you look at our squad you see ten brand new faces. There's going tct bo times when we play very smooth and pretty and then there will be.a broken play and there's some panic. That comes from youth," Bradley- Doppes said. The youth movement on the team has already produced a fine player in Fiona Davidson. After reg, istering five kills this past weekend against Central Michigan, Davidson kept up her pace with some talented defense and two serving aces. "We have a lot of quality practice between now and the Big Ten sea- son, but we have no competition un- til then. The schedule was done be- fore I came here, so it's not like*, planned it that way," Bradley-Doppes said. On a positive note, we have plenty of time to practice. We're go- ing to spend a lot of time working on fundamentals.,> "As a coach, there are some very positive things I'm seeing right now. We're certainly a whole lot bet- ter than we were a week ago." JOSE JUAREZ/DaiIy Junior setter Autumn Collins and sophomore middle-hitter Michele Horrigan both attempt to dig an Eastern Michigan ball in last night's Wolverine defeat. 0 0 1 0 0 s i I i Miciigan Memories last a lifetime in a MicfdganEnsian.
