M The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, September 12.1990 - Page 9 RECORDS Continued from page 8 sive stage. Maybe he's been at the same potty training session as Bjork of the Sugarcubes. "Velouria" is poppy, but never its the brilliantly banal heights of 'Gigantic." Kim Deal only knows how to play one bass riff, which she does for most of this four song EP. Joey Santiago with the receding headline plays a sharp Lou Reed gui- tar better than the withered old wanker himself has managed since the days of Transformer. Ms. Deal sings a Neil Young tune, "I've .Been Waiting Too Long," and frankly, she should be given more of the vocal chores in the future. There's an endearing ama- teurism in her deadpan demeanor. The skinny drummer sings one song that sounds like ye olde Wire on a bad day, and Francis finishes the EP off with the type of short, absurdist anecdote that only Tom Waits can pull off these days. The Pixies are treading water in *the same psychotic, self-obsessed mud as the likes of Bob Mould. Not much of an art threat at all. -N. Mustafa Zuberi SAY IT IN THE... DAILY JoY Continued from page 5 though," Smallens said. "They went and handcuffed us and while they're doing that they're saying, "I don't know. Maybe we'll have to arrest the drummer too because he was mouthing some of the words."' Smallens offered a conclusion on the whole event: "'These people are on a mission." While he said he feels the arrests make a statement, Smallens also said he feels more musicians need to become involved, if they are to combat what he feels is censorship of lyrical content. "More people than Too Much Joy have to get on the kick," he said. "Especially rock bands have to start doing a little more than wearing a t-shirt about this. Bon Jovi should do what we did." This is a time of worry for musi- cians, he continued, because the mu- sic industry could experience a seri- ous chilling effect. Many record companies are already voluntarily putting warning stickers on albums that contain potentially offensive content. "What it's going to cause musicians to do, this whole record labeling thing, the whole evil of it, is it inately forces musicians to self- censor themselves," h.e said. "That's the ultimate evil of all of this... when people start censoring them- selves because of the climate. That's what scares me and that's basically what we're reacting against." Quotes of the Day "Sailor baby, I'd go to the end of the world for you." "Rockin' good news!" - Lula and Sailor in Wild at Heart Besides the need for better-known names in the anti-censorship cam- paign, Smallens admits he would like company. "It's lonely at the bottom," he said. Does Smallens plan to return to the Broward County area? "Probably for a court date," he said. I. CLASSIFIEDS 1 III Look, ma! It's the Pixies!
