Page 14--The Michigan Daily - Monday, September 10, 1990 LIONS CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 touchdown pass to Robert Clark and pitched to Barry Sanders for a 1-yard scoring run before Tampa Bay defenders began to harass him. He was sacked five times and Bob Gagliano once. Linebacker Ervin Randle, who had two and a half sacks in five seasons, had three yesterday. Peete beat Tampa Bay on a last- minute touchdown run a year ago in Detroit's 17-16 victory. A touch- down run on a rollout was reversed by replay officials yesterday, and Peete fumbled into Tampa Bay's end zone two plays later. "It's really unexplainable," Peete said of his fast start and second quarter collapse. "I had guys open but couldn't hit them." Testaverde could. He hit Bruce Perkins for an 8-yard touchdown and Anderson on the 19-yarder to give Tampa Bay the lead for good at 21- 1Z. Peete and Clark connected on four straight completions to tie the game at 7-7 in the first. Clark caught the fourth pass ball at the 15, faked out Rodney Rice and ran untouched into the end zone. The Lions took a 14-7 lead with 113 left in the first quarter on Sanders' 1-yarder off the option. Sanders, the NFC Rookie of the .Year last season with 1,470 yards rushing, carried 14 times for 79 yards and a touchdown. The Tampa Bay defense was set up to stop him but shut down the pass as well. "You can't stay in the same defense with the run and shoot," Rucs coach Ray Perkins said. "We had about three different defensive packages withsome different wrink- les in each ofsthose packages." The Lions closed to 3 1-21 on a 44-yard.pass from Gagliano to Clark with 5:34 left. Gagliano's pass for Jeff Campbell on the Lion's next series was picked off by Wayne Haddix and returned for Tampa Bay's final touchdown. JOSE JUAREZ/oaiy Andy Stabile found out quickly that athletes are not exempt from the type of problems that most other first-year students encouter in trying to adjust to college life. In the end, though, Stabile took refuge in the company of his teammates and managed to turn around both his athletic and academic standing during the winter term. STABILE Continued from page 11 annoying little things that were slowly making me a very unhappy camper. Fall term finally began to wind down and there I was - weeks behind and plenty lost in my classes, muscles feeling like hamburger from the countless miles swam, not getting along with my roommate and trying to prepare my parents for "a slightly lower GPA." In a nutshell, I hated college life. I began to ask myself why I did all this. Where was the glory of being a Michigan athlete? How did other athletes handle their life? How did everyone else around me seem so happy and in control? And worse yet, I had no answers. Then the best possible thing that could have happened to me finally occurred. The term ended. It was home for Christmas, then off to Florida for a couple of weeks of training. More importantly, it gave me time to regroup. My body still didn't feel much better, but I could now concentrate on just swimming. As hard as we swam for those two weeks in the sun, it seemed easy compared to the two months I had just went through. Soon the time came to head back north and I couldn't help but think I was turning back into the storm. But it wasn't to be. No sooner did the winter term begin than I realized that I was a different person. I seemed to see warning signs to bad situations as as they unfolded as opposed to once I was in trouble. I could keep myself on the right path. I saw how a little extra homework early in the term would make the second part easier. I saw how talking to friends about problems seemed to help. Most importantly, I saw that all the good qualities and hard work that got me to the University had somehow pulled me through all the hard times. I had changed over the course of the first term- grown up in a way that wouldn't let me go through all that mess again. Other things changed as well- or at least I saw them differently. I began to swim better, finally seeing the hard work of the early season paying off. People around me began to realize it meant something that I was a swimmer. I was able to keep up with my classes. My roommate and I even began to iron out our differences. I actually started having fun. I began to realize that what I went through was not uncommon. Most first-year students, athletes or not, go through these growing pains to one extent or another. It yas all part of learning about myself, growing up, and enjoying life. Finally the swimming season came to a close, and soon after that, the school year. As all the students began to leave Ann Arbor, I began to realize all the friends I had made and would miss. I started to see how some of the rough times we shared were really the good times I was looking so hard for. As much as I enjoy the good times of the summer, I can't help but look forward to those of the upcoming school year. This time I'll know how to enjoy them the right way. Gorby awaits season premier of Griddes It's that time of year again. Tfie air turns cold, the leaves turn colors, and the world turns its collective attention to that favorite autumn pasttime, Griddes. Mikhail Gorbachev, pictured here with Finnish President Mauno Koivisto, is all smiles after discovering "inside information" regarding this week's Duke-Northwestern clash in the heralded S.A.T. Bowl. For everyone who is unfamiliar with the game (and there must be at least a couple of you), the rules are as simple as a Michigan State entrance examination (kidding. Only kidding). Just pick the winner of each of the following games and return your entry with your name and phone number to the Student Publications Building, 410 Maynard. The contestant with the most correct picks wins a $12 gift certificate to O' Sullivan's Eatery and Pub on South University. 1. Michigan at Notre Dame 13. Washington at Purdue 2.
