"Phyllis Ocker has served the University of Michigan for more than 30 years and she has done a su- perb job," Interim Athletic Director fack Weidenbach said. "She has made a strong contribu- tion to the overall management of ige athletic department and in the Thort time that I have had direct con- *act with her, she has done an excel- lint job of improving the women's pogram at Michigan," he added. : Ocker's stay at Michigan began ii September of 1961, when she started as an assistant professor in Nuggets' ::DENVER (AP) - Doug Moe, (Ee wise-cracking coach of the Den- V r Nuggets for 10 years, stepped Own Thursday after months of speculation about his job status. The departure of Moe was not a $irprise as the Nuggets, purchased list year by Bertram Lee, Peter By- noe and Robert Wussler, continue to shake up the front office and team make-up. General Manager Bernie Bicker- staff, who recently left the Seattle SuperSonics to help restructure the Nuggets, would not address ques- tions on who would replace Moe. "All parties agree it is best if we move in another direction," Nuggets president Carl Scheer said at a news conference. "The very success of an NBA franchise in Denver, and the fact that there is even a team here, is because of Doug Moe. I would like eto think of this as a period of tribute instead of mourning." Moe coached the San Antonio Spurs for four seasons, compiling a a 177-135 record, before coming to the Nuggets as an assistant coach in 1980. He was promoted to head coach midway through the 1980-81 season. His 10-year record in Denver was 432-357, and he led the Nuggets to two Midwest Division titles, V44 *6144q"d physical education. She coached Michigan's field hockey team for five seasons (1974-78), compiling a 33-33-3 record before succeeding Virginia Hunt in 1978 as the third women's athletic director. "Serving as women's athletic di- rector has been an interesting profes- sional experience," Ocker said. "Steady improvement and positive change have been the hallmarks of my tenure. "The alumni support, especially from the local groups, has been out- standing with scholarships and the senior luncheon as examples." Ocker earned her master's degree from Smith College and began her coaching career at the University of Oregon in 1958. "The women's program is in good shape and we have an outstand- ing staff. I would hope to see the program flourish. We have a good base and whoever comes in can take it to the next level." oe resigns winning Coach of the Year honors in 1987-88. Last March, he became the 11th coach in NBA history to win 600 games. Moe, emotional during his re- marks Thursday, said he has had dis- cussions in the past few weeks with Bickerstaff and Bynoe. At a meeting Wednesday night, it was decided to end the relationship. "When a new ownership group comes in, I think they need their own identity," Moe said. "Personally, I don't think this is a bad move for them. We weren't able to work things out and the organiza- tion decided to go another way. I wish them the best of luck. I have no regrets whatsoever, no animosity. But after 10 years, it's tough to leave the people you're close to." After word of Griddes' return reached Jordan, people packed up and ran for the closest newspaper stand in which they could participate in this weekly contest. To no avail, they discovered that Griddes is a Daily exclusive. . , ,_, This will serve as an introduc- tion to the Daily's own weekly pick-a-game to first-year players. It's called Griddes and, no, it's not pronounced like those things engineers use to map coordinates. Each week, we will list 20 col- lege football games in which you need to select the winner. The painfully obvious object is to cor- rectly choose all 20 winners and hope nobody else does. Included in the 20 games will be the one involving Slippery Rock Univer- sity, but don't fret if you miss their scoring summary on Sports- center or Headline News. At each Michigan home football game, The Rock's score will be announced. Griddes will appear as a part of Sports Monday, beginning this coming week, and all entries must be turned into the Daily offices on the top floor of the Student Publi- cations Building at 420 Maynard by Friday at 5 p.m. The person who correctly picks the most games will win the fabu- lous prize offered for that week - like a dinner for two at one of Ann Arbor's finest eating establish- ments. 1 - u_________ WHAT'S HAPPENING RECREATIONAL SPORTS INTRAMURAL SPORTS PROGRAM ALL CAMPUS, CO-RECREATION, AND FRATERNITY SOCCER SIGN-UPS TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1990 11:AM - 4:30PM INTRAMURAL SPORTS BUILDING SOCCER OFFICIALS CLINIC TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1990 6:30PM INTRAMURAL SPORTS BUILDING FLEXIBLE SCHEDULING, $4.80/HR FOR INFORMATION CALL 763-3562 - - FUUUGEHW [USTOM-BUILT FUTON FRAMES IN SINGLE- OR DOUBLE-BED SIZES - Call (313) 665-9211 to order STURDY, Makes GODD-LDOKIING UNFINISHED PINE.
