Two things: a mellifluous voice reading the good book and hearing the rhythm and cadence of the words glide out as the author intended. Such treats are not rare in the English Department at the University of Michigan, as they host many readings during the year (sometimes twice a week) given by the authors themselves. Last year the University welcomed, among many others, writers Tim O'Brien (Going After Cacciato), Ethan Canin (Emperor of the Air), and William Kennedy (Ironweed), and poets Adrienne Rich, Robert Haas and Gwendolyn Brooks (the latter coming in for the four day Robert Hayden Festival). Next year the University welcomes back Sharon Dilworth, winner of the Iowa Short Fiction Award for her first book, The Long White, poet Grace Paley and writer Lee Smith. Readings are usually at Rackham and Weantyou! Write for~~ Dal r seats fill up quickly. A complete listing will be available in the fall in the Hopwood Room (1006 Angell Hall, 764-6296) or the English Department (seventh floor, Mason Hall, 764-6330). For hopeful writers and poets alike, part of the excitement lies in seeing real authors at the podium, some as nervous and idiosyncratic as anyone in the audience, and realizing that many mistakes happen before anything magical hits the page. And who doesn't imagine themselves as one day being the object of Professor Delbanco's graceful, eloquent and always erudite introduction? But the readings are not just for aspiring wordsmiths alone, they're for anyone who can imagine the capricious, stirring and sometimes shivering effect of the spoken word.
