Y Football vs. UCLA Sunday, 12 p.m. Michigan Stadium SPORTS Tuesday, September 18,_1990 Field Hockey vs. Ball State Saturday, 3 p.m. Tartan Turf -s The Michigan Daily MO'S FIRST LUNCHEON: Azcona punts his way to No. 1 by Ryan Schreiber Daily Football Writer A stellar performance from fill-in punter Ed- uardo Azcona in South Bend has secured the sophomore a starting slot in this Saturday's game versus UCLA and possibly beyond. After naming Azcona the Kick Team Cham- pion for the week of the Notre Dame game, Michigan head coach Gary Moeller made it clear at yesterday's football luncheon that regular Chris Stapleton may have a difficult time recap- turing his position. "He'll be the punter this week," Moeller said of Azcona. "He has to get beat out now. I was pleased with his performance. Every week's a new challenge, but I thought he did a good job. "Lou Holtz referred to their kid (Craig Hen- trich) as the best punter in the country, and Eddie went in and out-kicked him." Azcona averaged 41.3 yards on three kicks for the night as the replacement for the injured Sta- pleton, who broke his foot during the summer. Moeller remained visibly bitter about the loss, especially since the Wolverines had done an effective job on special teams. He compared the game with the 31-30 defeat against Miami in 1988 that saw the Wolverines give up 17 points in the final nine minutes. "It's so God-dang frustrating, the whole game plan," he said. "The one thing we wanted to do was to do well in special teams. We didn't want to turn the ball over like we did, but you wanted to do well in the damn special teams. "We beat them in the special teams, which was where they had an advantage point in the game. You know, you win the special teams and rush for 457 yards, you should win that game. "Our kids are down and we should be down. We very honestly went into that game with the idea that we were going to win that game. And I'm not just whispering from the graveyard, ei- ther. That's what hurts." The first-year coach also expressed his disap- pointment with Michigan's inability to add to the lead and hold the Irish down. "On their final drive, you're caught in be- tween by that (missed) field goal and the missed opportunity when we threw the interception (in the end zone)," he said. "Now, they were coming down with the idea that they want to win the game and score a touchdown, but they can alto settle for a field goal if they have to. "So now the run, the pass, the mixing itw with the time allotted on the clock gives thil what I call a balanced opportunity. You couldI't really do just everything defensively that ybu wanted to do to strictly stop the pass." When discussing ball spots for close ma- surements, Moeller called the Irish luck "unbelievable" and that when "they measpre three, they get three. They measure four of ouis, we get one." Moeller was most impressed with the "toughness" of sophomore Jon Vaughn in I* first start. The young tailback was responsible for 201 of Michigan's ground yards, earning Qf- fensive Hustler honors for the week. "Jon Vaughn's not a little kid," Moeller said; "He doesn't look real big, but he has the ability to be a physical runner." The only casualty at Notre Dame was outside linebacker Alex Marshall, who Moeller said is day-to-day with a twisted right ankle and may- be ready for action in the Wolverines' home openec Saturday. JOSE JUAREZ/Daly Michigan head coach Gary Moeller leaves the Notre Dame field after a pre-game workout Saturday. Michigan lost to the Irish, 28-24. (AP) - Wayne Fontes has had better Mon- days. One day after his club won its first game of the season, the Detroit coach was in the dumps over the news that the Lions could possibly be without three of their top defen- sive players against Tampa Bay next week. Free safety Bennie Blades is ex- pected to miss at least two weeks with an injured left knee, linebacker Chris Spielman is nursing a sore right shoulder and nose tackle Jerry Ball has soreness in his back and ankle. "I'm concerned about it and wor- ried," Fontes said Monday at his weekly news conference. "We won't know until (Tuesday) about the in- juries to Bennie and Chris Spielman. Right now, it doesn't look good. "If I were a betting man, I would bet they'd both be out for the game, which puts a damper on Monday. I'm not having a very good Monday." Blades missed most of Sunday's 21-14 victory over Atlanta after get- ting hit on the left knee by a helmet early in the first quarter. He watched the second half on crutches with an immobilizer on his left knee. "Bennie said he doesn't feel as sore today, but I'm looking at two weeks (he'll be out)", Fontes said. "It's an injury like Rodney Peete had last year. We might have to sit him a couple of weeks." Spielman played one of the best games of his career: 12 tackles, a quarterback sack, and a recovered fumble. One of those tackles stopped Atlanta running back Steve Brous- sard on 4th and one in Detroit territory. "Spielman is hurting like a __________________________________________________________________________________ U YE 4' WANTED: STUDENT PHONATHON CALLERS puppy today," Fontes said. "He's re- ally hurting. When Chris Spielrhan comes in and says it hurts, yoq've got to believe him." Ball sat out part of the secon half with a sore ankle Sunday, a then developed a sore back Monday. If Blades is out for a long time, Fontes said the Lions would liko to re-sign former Michigan State star John Miller, who played with the club last season, but didn't make the final cut this year. Herb Welch, who started for the Giants when they won the Super Bowl, would start in place of Blades. "Herbie did a good job (agaii Atlanta)," Fontes said. "He was one of the guys we were impressed with. He always seemed to be around the ball. We may have to count on hiim to take a starting role now." Victor Jones likely would start in place of Spielman if he's out for the Tampa Bay game. Rookie DIn Owens could replace Ball at noseM tackle, Fontes said. . 0 Fontes said Peete will continue.. to be the Lions' starting quarterback despite a poor second half against-the Falcons.
