The Michigan Daily/New Student Edition - Thursday, September 6, 1990 - Page 15 Daily shopper scouts for bargains Prices of student staples at campus- area grocery stores compared One sunny day in May, an anonymous Daily reporter walked across campus, from store to store, bearing nothing but a small notebook and a keen eye for bargains. Here's what he/she learned: Bread Mac'n'Cheese Pop Tarts Yogurt 1/2% Milk Corn Flakes Ramen Spaghetti Ragu Sauce Peanut Butter Lettuce 2 Liter Coke Nutter Butters Orange Juice Tomato Soup White Village Stop Blue Campus Market Hop-In Corner 'n'Go Front Corner 1.25 1.29 1.29 1.29 0.85 0.65 0.73 1.85 1.79 1.55 209 1.99 1.89 0.73 0.7. 0.69 0.69 1.55 1.59 1.59 1.45 1.49 ...3 1.87 0.29 0.29 0.29 03 5 Kroger 0.89 0.53 1.33 0.65 1.41 1.37 0.20 0.85 1 .0 2 5 4 1 .5 4 ... .. .. 2.92 3q49 1.05 1.43 2.77 0.89 1.35 1.79 1.19 1.29 1.69 3.19 1.17 3.09 1.99 0.69 09 1.59 1.29 AMY FELDMAN/Daily 1.39 1.19 1.09 2.. 1.99 2.16 2.25 0.54 09 0.46 2.19 Reflections Choosing the right store to buy groceries from can be a big job. Here, a student reflects on his choices at Bluefront The Daily Shopper treked halfway acroos campus and back to enlighten you with price information. Take his/her words to heart and you can't go wrong. 1.89 *~~O.S9. 2.09 0.59 2.29 1.69 0.35 Numbers in bold signify the lowest price found for each item (not including Kroger). Numbers in gray box signify the highest price for each item. A blank space means the store didn't have the item. NOTE: White Market, Blue Front, and Campus Corner rate UNACCEPTABLE due to the lack of Nutter Butters on their shelves. Statistics from these stores were included for the sake of completeness, but do not share the greater external validity of the remainder of the figures. Conclusions: If you shop at any of the small on-campus groceries, expect to pay about 30% more for your groceries than you would at Kroger, Meijer, or Farmer Jack, Ann Arbor's traditional megafoodstores. With the exception of Village Comer, none of the smaller stores really came that close to the prices at a legitimate grocery. Like Kroger, Meijer, and Farmer Jack, the "convenience" stores Hop-in and Stop'n'Go are open 24 hours most of the time. The difference is that, with few exceptions, Hop-in was more expensive than every other store for any given item. Of the large groceries, Kroger is closest to campus, with one store 3 blocks from the athletic campus, and one store 3 blocks from the medical center. If you're going to Farmer Jack, you better be driving. If you go to Meijer, not only should you drive, but bring camping gear as well. Known to Meijer marketing types as "Thrifty Acres," Meijer stocks more different items on more floor space than any store you'll see before or since. Out-of-state checks? 8 "managers" will converge on you and take thumb-prints, but it's a small price to pay for a trip to a place where frozen bagels and VCRs are only a few aisles apart.
