lichigan Daily/New Student Edition - Thursday, September 6, 1990 - Page 9 Students protest Freshmen Convocation by Joanna Broder Daily Staff Writer University President James Dud- erstadt welcomed 1400 members of the class of 1990 at the annual Freshmen Convocation Tuesday night amidst the periodic protests of some students seated in the balcony. Members of the Michigan Stu- dent Assembly's Student Rights Commission yelled to the president, sking him to explain why the MSA president was not one of the chosen * peakers at the event. The protesters also demanded that Duderstadt dis- cuss the recent administrative deci- gion to establish an armed campus police force. MSA president Jennifer Van Va- ley, who said that she was originally invited to speak at the convocation and later taken off the program, said she felt "upset, silenced, and angry." Van Valey said MSA presidents have traditionally taken part in the convocation. Mary Ann Swain, vice president for Student Services, said the convo- cation invited different student lead- ers to speak at this year's convoca- tion. Lynn Bergquist, the president of Mortar Board, an honorary soci- ety, spoke this year. Van Valey disagreed with the de- cision to choose a different student speaker each year. "If they should give precedence to anyone, it should be the person that the students elected as their leader," she said. About 25 members of the com- mission distributed flyers asking the incoming students to "stop cops on campus." Commission chair Corey Dol- gon, a Rackham graduate student, said over 70 percent of students who voted in last year's MSA election opposed an armed campus police. The issue appeared on the ballot as a symbolic referendum. The regents voted to establish the force in late June. The flyers also urged both parents and students to ask President Duder- stadt why he wouldn't permit the MSA president the opportunity to speak at the convocation. Dolgon said it's "MSA's responsibility to advocate students rights. The Uni- versity refuses to recognize that stu- dents have the right to participate in decision making." The commission's flyers said "the University administration has never had a commitment to safety." They accused the University of "ignoring the safety task force's rec- ommendations regarding lighting, night-time bus service, Safewalk, and education and acting only on cre- ating an armed presence." Steven Oberski, a first year stu- dent from Goodrich, Mich. said he was not offended by the protesters. "It's great that they voice their opin- ions (but) it's too bad they don't have a forum for discussion with the bigwigs," he said. Not all students, however, agreed See HONORS, Page 16 Dude FILE PHOTO/Daily This is University President James Duderstadt.
