Oregon captured the meet with 33 points, while the Wolverines tallied 67. First-year runner Jennifer Arm- strong finished fifth overall for the Wolverines, posting a time of 17 minutes, 50 seconds. Sophomore Molly McClimon took ninth place, with a time of 17:58. "Molly set a personal record for a cross country meet, and it was Jennifer's fastest time of the year," coach Sue Foster said. The Wolverines managed to separate themselves into two distinc- tive packs, with the top three run- ners staying together, and places four through eight competing likewise. Running with the first pack, sophomore Amy Buchholz finished third on the Wolverine roster, twelfth overall, with a time of 18:03. Though pleased with the efforts of the top three, it was the aggres- sive style of the second pack which drew praise from Foster. "They went out fast, maybe a lit- tle too fast, but they really went after it," Foster said. "Now, all we have to do is get them up a little higher." Senior Amy Bannister, who took 18th place with an 18:24, paced the second pack. Chris Tyler captured 23rd place, Kim Haluscsak took 27th, Megan Nortz placed 28th, and Chris Szabo finished 33rd. The course at the Minnesota Invi- tational is the same one which will be run at the Big Ten Champi- onships. The weekend meet provided experience for the Wolverines that can only help the team later in the season, according to Foster. "The course was deceiving and a lot tougher than we thought. This should help us," Foster said. Iowa State placed third with 84 points. Weaver, host team Mio nesota, and Colorado garnered places four, five, and six, respectively, in a field of eleven. Next weekend, the Wolverines travel to Michigan State for the Michigan Intercollegiates. Lions win 34-27: Gagliano thrown into QB controversy MINNEAPOLIS, MN (AP) - It's hard to believe that supposedly untalented Bob Gagliano is a football hero. It's even harder to believe that the supposedly talent- rich Minnesota Vikings are a 1-4 football team. Believe it. Believe it all. "I always thought Gagliano was the guy they should be going with," Vikings coach Jerry Burns said Sunday after Gagliano passed for 299 yards and three touchdowns as the Detroit Lions stunned Minnesota 34-27. "He's the guy that put it all together at the end of last year. He can throw the ball very well. He took some pretty good hits in there and, kept coming back." Even though Gagliano quarter- backed the Lions to victories in their, final five games of 1989, Coach Wayne Fontes considers him the team's third-best all-round QB behind second-year man Rodney Peete and rookie Andre Ware. The only reason Gagliano started Sunday was that Peete was injured last week and Ware isn't quite ready to play. "Rodney has better skills," Fontes said. "The guy with the best touch (Ware) is waiting his turn on the bench. (Gagliano) made the plays when he had to." Gagliano was a 12th-round draft choice in 1981 who was released eight times by five different NFL teams. He also bounced around the USFL for two years before that league folded. He doesn't seem anxious to create a quarterback controversy in Detroit. "I'm actually getting sick of the whole thing. I know Rodney is, too," said Gagliano, who completed 16 of 31 passes. "They are not my de- cisions. They are Wayne's decisions and I'm not going to worry about it." The Vikings have been infamous for QB controversies over the y but they have plenty more to woW about now. Minnesota's last 1-4 start was in 1967, Bud Grant's first season as coach and a year before Burns joined him as offensive coordinator. Preseason favorites to win their second straight division title and make their fourth straight playoff appearance, the Vikings have lost successive home games to tradition NFC Central also-rans Tampa Bf and Detroit after 13 straight Metro- dome wins. The Vikings had lost home games to those two teams in the same season and hadn't lost to Detroit in the eight games since the 1986 opener - Burns' first game as head coach.
