Moeller's bash billed for New Year's Day MADISON - Get out your calendar and make a special notation. You're being invited to a party at which Gary and Ann Moeller, as well as the rest of the Michigan Wolverines, are requesting your attendance. Now you won't formally be receiving your invitation in the mail along with Ed McMahon's latest sweepstakes entry. Just simply show up. Formal attire is not a necessity either. The Moeller's are pretty down- to-earth people. (Picture a trip to Fred Flinstone's house - all you need is a barrel of laughs.) The Gig' will be held almost coast-to-coast and it'll take place just when the hangovers are ending from New Year's Eve. Yep. January 1, 1991. Time: roughly 8:15. Place: Two locations. The primary sight is Pasadena, California. If you can't make it to California, plan on returning to Ann Arbor a little early and meet on the corner of South University and Church Street. Of course, Gary will be at the California location, but,if the bash gets just a little bit big on South University, then I'm sure he'll see you via CNN. Now that the Associated Press is at least considering the Wolverines as the top team in the country, if not definitely annointing them as such, Moeller can begin to make the necessary party arrangements. Mo will throw the bash Bo never got to. He'll conclude his first year as the head man at Michigan with a Rose Bowl victory... and a national championship. "Who says you have to beat Notre Dame to be No. 1," he'll ask. "Hey, I did it in six games, how many did it take you?" basketball *coach Steve Fisher will counter since he also won a national championship in his first year as coach. The task is pretty simple. Call the florist, order a few dozen roses. Call the caterer, have them make some cheesecake - since it was after Wisconsin that Michigan began thinking again about a national championship. And with that theme in mind, order a few kegs of Milwaukee's Best. (Sidenote: Did you know that in Milwaukee, Milwaukee's Best is not even sold? Think about it.) Make sure to order ice, too. It'll be a big party. California and *Michigan. Of course there are a few minor details to attend to, in addition to ordering caviar to the lockerroom and the riot police to South U. They are victories over Michigan State, Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Purdue and Ohio State, as well as a bowl opponent. Like I said, that of course, is a mere formality. The important decision? Whether or hot to replace the coffee beans with Folgers' Mountain Grown crystals. UMICHIGAN STATE WEEK: The Spartans are invading Ann Arbor this week for their annual showdown with the Wolverines. It's a good time to be a part of the state of Michigan. Everyone chooses sides, the radio stations play the fight songs, and a nation tunes in on Saturday to see why this state is so crazy about football. Of course, after the Spartans have two offensive possessions, the public will be snoozing. Is there anything in this world more boring than George Perles' offensive system? Granted, the defense year in and year out, is something to behold. But the offense is just one big snore. Saturday should be interesting down at the Stadium, but the loss of receiver Courtney Hawkins appears to make the Spartan offense even more one-tracked than it has been in the past. The next time Perles threatens to bolt for more money, someone I should play the Board of Trustees - who are usually in such a frenzy over this possible abandonment - a tape of the Spartans on offense. It's the perfect cure for insomnia. Then take the vote on whether to give George an extra half million that he's attempting to bribe out of them. I nominate that George Perles be named lifetime defensive coordinator of Michigan State. Hire Mouse Davis for the offense. They might actually field a team that can consistently beat Iowa. Due to the proximity of UM and MSU, the rivalry flows over to the student body. Last year, Spartan students spray painted Michigan's cube and Diag, while holding a 24-hour vigil on their sacred Sparty to prevent decapitation or paint. Last year, some Wolverine faithful outsmarted the guards by simply entering the stadium and painting the white 'S' on the field with a big 'M.' Michigan students should be aware that some Spartans will probably again attempt to do some sort of prank on the Ann Arbor campus, but the lack of school spirit will prevent this school from doing anything to prevent it. EMSU II: The day has finally arrived. High expectations accompany the Michigan hockey team as they faceoff the season this Friday down at Miami-Ohio. But by looking a little farther down the schedule, a little foresight could help solve a embarrassing dilemma. Each year, Michigan State shows up at Yost Ice Arena and is greeted by a sold out crowd which numbers more Spartan partisans than Michigan fans. Now that's embarrassing. There has been all sorts of talk about how to remedy the situation. Last year a local businessman, and large hockey supporter, was so upset at the scene that he even considered buying out the arena and then giving away the tickets at his store. Tickets are already going fast for the Friday November 9 meeting, the only one this year between the two at Yost. The two teams decided to grab more money, taking away the Ann Arbor-East Lansing venues in * February for a two-game series at Detroit's Joe Louis Arena. The Michigan-Michigan State game is a guaranteed good time, and if one plans to see only one game this year, this is the one. Plan ahead, and head down to the Michigan Ticket Department at 1000 State Street this week and purchase tickets. They cost only $4.00 and the money will leave some Spartan hockey fans out in the cold. Now that's money well spent. Team (First-place votes) Last Week RAcnrd Points I V V V a V " y w". %y v yr . 1. "But it's [the lack of competition] nice at times. It doesn't put a lot of pressure on you, it lets you work on stuff. We've been able to give our subs a lot of playing time, and we've been able to experiment with different people at different positions." Saturday's game against Bowling Green was also an easy victory for the Wolverines. Michigan dictated the course of the game, enabling all of the substitutes to receive substan- tial playing time in this match as well. However, unlike the contest against the Buckeyes, the scoring in the Bowling Green game was much more spread out. Five different play- ers scored for Michigan, with the first goal coming 13 minutes into the game off a shot by Krista Towne. Ten minutes later, Wolverine Al- isha Stewart was tackled in Bowling Green territory, and Michigan was awarded a penalty kick. Jenny Stein- hebel converted the shot, putting the Wolverines up, 2-0. Towards the end of the first half, Towne assisted Stewart on what turned out to be an empty-net goal. Bowling Green's goalie had fallen down while trying to prevent Towne from getting a shot off. Towne then passed the ball to Stewart, who scored uncontested. "We played with good intensity in the first half," Towne said. "Everyone played well and con- tributed." Molly Douma and Shannon Loper each scored goals in the sec- ond half. The Wolverines' face Western Michigan tomorrow at 4:30. RUGBY Continued from page 9 on Saturday after losing two very close games to Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo by the counts of 10-9 and 9-4, respectively. Stroman, however, was quick to praise the efforts of the B-squad. "They played tenacious defense and fought back valiantly, almost winning both games in the closing minutes," Stroman stated. Leading the charge for Michigan was captain Jonathan Lichterman and players Brian Anderson, Ed Spy- brook, and Jameson Townsend. Stroman has been pleased with the overall play and the direction in which the team is heading. "Our players continue to make huge strides," Stroman said. "I have confidence that we will be a force to be reckoned with, once the Big Ten Tournament rolls around in Novem- ber." The team will return to senior league action next Saturday as it travels to Chicago to face the Chicago Blaze. The team is hoping to improve on its 1-1-1 league record. 1 Eric Lemont- 'Le Bon Mot' Read him in the Daily 7- _____________________________________________________ I1 Sports Monday Senior Editor Jeff Sheran Night Editors Matt Rennie Theodore Cox Asst.
