Page 14 -The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, October 3, 1990 'Fatman' stunned over Griddes loss A leading Washington administrator, sometime known as the "Cake Crusader" takes time out from the intense meetings toward deficit reduction to ponder an even greater challenge, this week's Griddes picks. He can't help but wonder how he let the fish get away last week. "I don't understand how a team called 'the Ducks' could beat that almighty Brigham Young powerhouse," the grim-faced Fatman said. "And since when has Michigan State been as good as Rutgers? I just can't figure it out." Fortunately, he'll get another shot at the $12 gift certificate to O'Sullivan's Eatery and Pub this week. Tiebreaker: Michigan - Wisconsin - Name: - -- Phone: Dude: Spring some . bucks for pom-poms by Adam Miller Daily Sports Writer Dear President Duderstadt, Figuring you read the Michigan Daily with your morning cup of Java, I'm sure you came across a column by sports editor Mike Gill about Michigan fans in the September 24th edition. He doesn't think they're o enough. I agree. He thinks they attend games primarily to socialize. I agree. He doesn't think they care enough about the game. I agree. Usually. I, like you, attended the 1990 Rose Bowl. After the game, I met some USC fans who were amazed at the frenzied cheering in the Michigan section. They admitted that, until the final 2:00 when the game was sealed, they simply couldn't match the level of participation by the Michigan fans. Yes, they really were talking about us. Obviously, at the Rose Bowl, something different was going on in the stands. I'll tell you what it was: Pom-poms. Please, President Duderstadt, stop laughing. There is truth to the words. Consider the evidence. Michigan faced ASU in the 1987 Rose Bowl. Maybe there were 20,000 Michigan fans in the stands. The rest of the stadium belonged to ASU and every ASU fan had a large, gold pom-pom. Each play, the stadium lit up solid gold as the ASU fans rattled Harbaugh and the Wolverines and cheered their team on to victory. You were a new President at the 1989 Rose Bowl. You came to the pep- rally before the game to address the team and the Michigan fans. Remember your remarks? "We need good crowd support and I don't want to be out pom- pommed by the Pac-10 like we were last time!" That's right. Those were your words. As well as winning the game in 1989, we also won the battle in the stands. Each Michigan -fan on the University tour received a large (but, as you'll see, not large enough) pom-pom before the game. As you'll see on tapes of the game, there was a virtual sea of maize and blue in the stands and the crowd rocked, especially in the second half. So, recognizing this so-called "Pom-Pom Power," someone decided that the new student section at Crisler should have pom-poms, too. The only problem was, they were so small that there was barely anything to wave. Have you looked at the Pac-10 pom-poms? They're huge. It would take four of ours to make one of theirs. I know what you're thinking. Big pom-poms, big expense. This wout be true if you had to pass them out new at each game. But, at most schools, the students do not own their pom-poms. The school owns them, passes them out at the beginning of each game and collects them at the end. They -are even important enough that, at schools like USC, people arrive two hours before each game to leave them on the seats in the student section. If you've watched any games on TV recently, I am sure you've noticed that the fans at schools such as Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan State, Colorado, Auburn, USC and UCLA are shown a lot more often than fans from schools like Michigan are. They're active. They're loud. And you know what they've all got. Corner "Ik~eP Students!
