weekend, list campus cinema F R I D A Y Walk, Don't Run (Charles Walters, 1966) Lorch 7pm Japanese Studies/CG free A remake of The More the Merrier, Wall, Don't Run is Cary Grant's last film as an actor. The usual Grant .miability blends with humor to make a most agreeable film. f . * " " Body Double (Brian De Palma, 1984) MLB4 7pm/DBL Med Borrowing from several Hitchcock films as well as many different film ,enres, De Palma once again explores perverse sexuality. The plot is successfully complicated, with an emphasis on visuals rather than dialogue. It's movies like these endear De Palma to Pauline Kael. S * * " 0 " Crime of Passion (Ken Russell, 1984) MLB4 9:15/DBL Med With overly Freudian motivations, Kathleen Russell stars in this film as Joanne/China Blue, a fashion designer moonlighting as a hooker (fashion just doesn't pay like it used es. to). It's another film that inspired heated controversy upon its release, so you just gotta see it. " *" " "@"S Foreign Correspondent (Alfred Hitchcock, 1940) AudA 7pm/DBL CG It's only fitting on a night with two Hitchcock-influenced films that there should be one of the real thing. Joel McCrea (Meredith's pop, of Petticoat Junction idolatry) stars in the'title role as an American reporter in London caught in the middle of a Nazi spy ring. You might recognize some of the famous Hitchcock scenes. " 0 S S * " Our Man in Havana (Carol Reed, 1%0) AudA 9:15/DBL CG Adapted by Graham Greene from his novel, this satirical spy spoof stars Alec Guinness as a vacuum cleaner salesman who's recruited by the British Foreign Office to become a spy, after which they foolishly become convinced he's a top-notch secret agent. Cast also includes Burl Ives, Maureen O'Hara, Noel Coward, and Ernie Kovacs. Sweetie (Jane Campion, 1989) MLB3 7:30 & 9:30 AAFC The oddly vague narrative involves two sisters, one thin and repressed, the other fat and decadent without one iota of shame. The characters are pushed to extremes, but to brilliant effect - even though you might not identify with the characters themselves, the themes that emerge from their interactions will haunt you. S A T U R D A Y Autumn Sonata (Ingmar Bergman, 1978) MLB4 7:00,8:45 & 10:25 CG This is the one Bergman film where you won't mistakenly think you were going to see an Ingrid Bergman film - here you got 'em both. Bergman walks in his own tradition with his exploration of the female-female relationship, and Sven Nykvist's (most recently known for Crimes and Misdemeanors) cinematography is beautiful. " " "ge " " Caravaggio (Derek Jarman, 1986) AudA 7:30 & 9:15 AAFC Visually stunning avant-garde film about the 17th-century painter Michelangelo Merisi, who scandalized his contemporaries with both the controversial nature of his art, and his resistance to the social mores of his time. * "e"e S * Saturday Night Fever (John Badham, 1977) MLB3 lOpm/DBL Med Time to regress here, with one of the biggest fashion mistakes a decade ever committed. Tony Manero, here, with a poster of Sly Stallone on his wall and the de rigeur no-natural- fibers-here suit on his bod. It's a well acted and meaningful movie, but we all know you really went for the dancing. . 0e - * 6 0 I U I 11111K 11NJMS I~f IA~bRU~iA NEWS t : t~3 AM FAOITE RITJM. Ben-Hur (William Wyler, 1959) Mich 2:30 MTF Twelve Oscars went to this epic set in Palestine at the time of Christ. Chuck Heston plays the Jewish prince Judah Ben-Hur, a little guy who's loudly opposed to Roman domination. He loses his home, his family, his freedom, but never his spunk. The famous chariot race is visually impressive and very realistic. L'Avventura (Michelangelo Antonioni, 1960) AudA 7pm FVS free This beautifully photographed landmark of contemporary filmmaking is an incisive study of alienation in the modern world. When a group of young people on a yachting holiday go ashore, a woman disappears, and her fiance and best friend become romantically involved while searching for her. " 0 * " 0 0 The Mahabharata (Peter Brook, 1990) Mich 7pm MTF With a title meaning "the greatest story of all time," it has to be good. A 100,000 stanza Sanskrit poem over 2000 years old, it's the nationat epic of India, and the basis of all Hindu culture. Thus, no plot summary is going to do it justice. It's a long movie, at 170 minutes (for you non- math students, that's almost three hours). firs trun cinema Backstreet Dreams A smalll time hood finds himself responsible for raising an autistic child alone, save for a devoted young social worker.
