Spartans tie Orangemen SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP)- Of- fensively, Syracuse and Michigan State each did the things necessary* win. But the Orangemen felt more like losers after committing a critical defensive mistake that set up 19th- ranked Michigan State's game-tying field goal. "You saw how they (the Spar- tans) celebrated," said Syracuse coach Dick MacPherson after Michigan State's John Langeloh kicked a 43- yard field goal as time expired to end Saturday night's nationally televis game in 23-23 draw. "You didn't see our players cele- brating. Who tied who?" said MacPherson, who holds a special dislike for ties since the 1988 Sugar Bowl. That's when Auburn kicked a last-second field goal to knot Syra- cuse at 16-16 and end the Orange- men's bid for a perfect season. "Some say it's justified going for tie. They tied it, but we are an ind pendent and we're going to go for wins," he said. The Orangemen, who had gone ahead, 23-20, on John Biskup's 17- yard field goal with 1:25 to play, were stunned by the outcome, which left them at 1-1-1. Michigan State, is 0-0-1. "It's just like the Sugar Bowl," said senior safety Rob Thomso@ "You walk away numb. When the other team kicks for the tie, you feel like you've lost." Langeloh's kick came after it ap- peared the Orangemen had taken over on downs with 11 seconds remaining and secured the victory. But -the Spartans gained a reprieve when Syracuse was called for an offsides penalty on a fourth and foil incompletion. 1 Trivia Answer A* WHAT'S HAPPENING RECREATIONAL SPORTS Outdoor Recreation Program SEPTEMBER TRIPS ROCKCLIMBING TRIP Sat, September 22, 1990 to Grand Ledge Park Pre-Trip Mtg.: Wed, Sept. 19, 7 - 10PM NCRB HORSEBACK RIDING TRIP Sun., September 23, 1990 Pre-Trip Mtg.: Thurs., Sept 13, 7 - 8PM NCRB WILDERNESS STATE PARK/MACKINAW ISLAND TRIP Noon, Fri., October 5 - 7pm, Sun., October 7, 1990 Pre-Trip Mtg.: Wed., Sept. 26, 7 - 8PM NCRB For more information and to register please call 764-3967 George 1977 Foster in Sports Monday Senior Editors: Mike Gill Andrew Gottesman Night Editor: Matt Rennie Asst.
