Women's Basketball vs. Northwestern Tonight, 7:30 p.m. Crisler Arena SPORTS_ Friday, January 19, 1990 Wrestling vs. Illinois Saturday, 7:30 p.m. Varsity Arena The Michigan Daily, Page 19} Seasons in full swing for winter teams Women's cagers face Big Ten's b by John Niyo Daily Basketball Writer The Wolverines will hope to end a three game losing streak this weekend as they face two teams from opposite ends of the Big Ten women's basketball standings. First- place Northwestern (11-1 overall, 3- o Big Ten) and last-place Wisconsin (5-8, 0-3) will visit Crisler Arena tonight and Sunday. Michigan is coming off a disappointing road trip to Ohio State and Indiana. Especially painful for the Wolverines was the 60-58 loss to Indiana in which they turned the ball over on their last two possessions and consequently handed over the game. "They came back and really worked hard this week," head coach Bud VanDeWege said. "I think they realize how very close they are and they want to get over that hump. They were very spirited in practice and I was pleased with that." Most certainly they will have to play as spirited as they practice against the Wildcats tonight. After steamrolling over its first three conference foes, Northwestern, ranked 23rd in the latest AP poll, is heading to Ann Arbor for its first est worst conference road contest. Among the Wildcat home victories was a win over Ohio State and a 22-point thrashing of Indiana. "They're talented, they're hot, and they're in just such a groove that you've just got to be ready," VanDeWege said. "Northwestern has great balance, good size, good speed and great outside shooting (the Wildcats lead the nation in field goal percentage). They're a legitimate Big Ten title contender this year." VanDeWege and the Michigan team will face a couple of tough players named Michelle this weekend. Northwestern's 6-1 forward Michele Savage and Wisconsin's 6-1 forward Michelle Kozelka both lead their teams in scoring and rebounding. The Wildcats also boast Nancy Kennelly, currently fifth in the nation in assists. "They've got Kozelka inside who's been on a rampage, averaging 18 points and nine rebounds a game," VanDeWege said. "They added a lot of speed to their lineup this year, so they're a lot quicker team and they should be able to pose some defensive problems." -wor -Women's swimmers to EMU MICHIGAN SPORTS b Seve sriswr i "meofusimrs we aU Daily Sports Writer not going to swim. Nonetheless, Bahr remains confident entering the weekend. The Wolverines open their Big Ten season against Illinois Saturday and Purdue Sunday, each at the Varsity Arena. "I think we're more ready this weekend than. we were last weekend," Bahr said, referring Salem Yaffai's (126 lbs.) and Sam Amine's (158) returns to the starting lineup. Yaffai severed his tear duct last week, and will have to wear protective goggles this weekend. Amine missed his last two matches, after his neck tightened up prior to weighing in for the Oklahoma State match. "Salem returned to practice, and Men's track set for opener he wrestled like he was rusty," Bahr said. "I think Sammy's injury scared him more than anything else." James Rawls became the Wolverine starter at 142 when James Feldkamp surrendered his spot because of weight problems. The rookie Rawls was planning to be redshirted this year. "He's a typical freshman," Bahr said. "He hadn't been doing much in terms of conditioning. He's been getting in better shape this week." All-American senior Larry Gotcher will have something to prove this weekend at his 150 slot after dropping three of his last four matches. The fiercely competitive Gotcher has turned his intensity up a notch to prepare for the Big Ten season. "He's got to be a winner for us," Bahr said. "I think we'll see a dramatic change in the way he wrestles." by Eric Berkman Daily Sports Writer This weekend's Michigan Relays should serve as a barometer of success for the Michigan men's track team as the Wolverines prepare for Eastern Michigan and Michigan State, among others, in their home opener. "I think that for the first meet (last weekend's Eastern Michigan Invitational) we had some decent performances," Harvey said. "I'm fairly encouraged coming into the meet this week. This will be our first meet competing as a whore team." Harvey is looking for particularly strong showings from pole vaulter Brad Darr, high jumper Brad Holwerda, and sprinter Phi Ferguson. In addition, he predicts that Eastern will be tough in the relays and MSU will be competitive in sprints and in distance. The meet begins Saturday at 1 p.m. in the Track and Tennis Building. important meet for gymnasts' by Albert Lin Daily Sports Contributor The men's gymnastics squad heads to Chicago this weekend for the Windy City Invitational, a 12 school event which features all seven competing Big Ten members. Michigancoach Bob Darden was unsure about where his team might finish. "You don't know until you see the other teams," he said. Half of the participating teams have already posted scores in the 260's, out of a possible 300. "We're working on increasing our consistency on routines," stated Darden, "to push for [a score in] the 260's." Michigan posted a 259.80 in their last meet. An obvious favorite is the tear which beat the Wolverines lasi Saturday, the Minnesota Gophers. UNDERGRADUATE PSYCHOLOGY SOCIETY **MASS MEETING** MON., JAN. 22, 1990 7:30 P.M.
