A Message from Your American Friends
on Your 42nd Birthday
Dear Israel:
In the past 42 years the people of the State of Israel have built
cities out of the wilderness, and gardens out of the desert.
You have taken in refugees from across the globe, going out
of your way to rescue your persecuted and destitute breth-
ren in Yemen, and Ethiopia. When, in more recent days,
earthquakes struck in Mexico, and Armenia, Israeli rescue
teams were rapidly sent in. And when natural disaster
struck California, and South Carolina, you were likewise
quick to offer your aid. You have freely lent out your
knowledge in arid farming techniques, in lands from Kenya,
to Egypt, to Texas. And while the people of Romania were
still tending to their wounded during last year's revolution,
Israeli planes lifted medical supplies and doctors to help re-
lieve their burden. You have at all times been the closest
friend of the United States, as you have demonstrated time
and again in the United Nations, and around the world. We
offer you our best wishes on your 42nd birthday, and wish
you many more to come.
