Men's lacrosse club captures crown at NU The Michigan Daily - Sports Monday - April 23, 1990 - Page 5 Women's tennis loses, but still clinches seed by Rod Loewenthal Daily Sports Writer The Michigan men's lacrosse team travelled to Northwestern last weekend where they won it all. After turning in a lackluster performance last week against an overmatched Central Michigan club the Wolverines rebounded Sunday to capture the men's Big Ten club lacrosse championship. The Wolv- erines defeated a strong Wisconsin * team in Dyche Stadium, 12-4. Among a field of seven teams the Wolverines received a bye in the first round and then went on to destroy Illinois, 10-2 in the semifinals before meeting Wisconsin in the finale. The Badgers had been undefeated for the season and were expecting to emerge victorious in the tournament to capture the title. "We blew them out in the first half," said senior midfielder John Paul about the team's match against Wisconsin. "Then we coasted SOFTBALL Continued from page 1 game, 3-2. It ended in dramatic fash- ion in the tenth inning. Northwestern left two baserun- ners on in the top of the tenth as Michigan senior co-captain Jenny Allard pitched her way out of a jam, getting Gina Nolan to pop up for the third out. Allard went the distance allowing only one earned run. She also helped her own cause by going 4-for-4. "Jenny was superb for us this weekend," Hutchins said. "She pitched really well and she hit the hell out of the ball." In the bottom of the inning, Tholl, usually known for her de- fense, singled home Stacey Heams in for the winning run. "I guess I've always been known for my defensive play rather than my offense," Tholl said. "Whenever we need a play I want the ball hit to me. But I felt confident out there in the field and at the plate. I'm swinging the bat a little better than usual now, even though there were a couple of at-bats that I wasn't happy with." Michigan's Andrea Nelson, a winner in the Saturday's first game, through in the second half." Team captain Mike Kennedy was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player by leading his team past Illinois and by turning in a phenomenal performance against the Badgers. Throughout the season, Kennedy has been one of the driving forces on this championship team and against Wisconsin he wound up with 4 goals and 3 assists. Coach Robert DiGiovanni was ill and unable to attend the tournament games. However his son Rob DiGiovanni showed up to provide needed defense for the Wolverines. As goalie he recorded 21 saves against the Badgers. Sunday's match also showcased strength from Michigan's first midfield line of Rick Maicki, John Paul, and Tim Reilly. "This was really satisfying for us," Paul said "This was the first time we beat Wisconsin in the last four years." was knocked out of yesterday's first game in the third inning. But Kelly Forbis filled in admirably, allowing the Wolverines escape with a 4-3 win. "That third game, when we got down, we just did a really good job coming back," Hutchins said. "Kelly came in and kept us in the game. I'm really pleased that win." The fourth game of the weekend saw another stellar performance by Allard. She pitched seven scoreless innings for her eighth win of the season. She allowed only two hits on the afternoon and once again contributed a hit to her own cause. Michigan's only run was un- ear1,ed. Heather Lyke singled and scored aided by an error in the sixth inning providing all that Allard would need. And the four close victories this weekend may be all Michigan needed as well. "For us to win the title we need to win a lot of games," Hutchins said. "They just did an excellent job this weekend. This sweep was what we wanted. I couldn't be more proud of them. We're just taking it one game at a time now and that's the way it should be." by Jeni Durst Daily Sports Writer Though the Michigan women's tennis team won only one of its two matches last weekend, it was all they needed. The single victory leaves them with a Big Ten season record of 4-5, good enough to place them into the desired six-seed position for the Big Ten Tournament. The tournament alone determines the outcome of conference rankings - the dual match record means nothing except for tournament seeding. It is optimal to place into the top six seeds. The Wolverines needed a win in either of their final two Big Ten matches to accomplish this. They did so Saturday with a big victory over Ohio State. The pressure of a must-win situation pushed Michigan to a higher level. They defeated a tough Buckeye squad by an overwhelming score of 8-1. The Wolverines swept all six singles matches and captured two of the three doubles. The only loss suffered came at No.1 doubles where Michigan continues to struggle. The No. 1 team of Christine Schmeidel and Freddy Adam remains winless in the Big Ten. On Sunday, though, no amount of pressure could push the team past top-ranked Indiana. The loss came as no surprise since the Hoosiers are decidedly the strongest squad in the conference. Indiana finished first in the conference tournament last year and was picked to repeat the feat this season in the Big Ten preseason coaches poll. Michigan couldn't manage a single victory, falling to the Hoosiers 9-0. Michigan women's tennis player Amy Malik returns a backhand against Ohio State Saturday. The Wolverines clinched a favorable seed in the upcoming conference tournament despite being soundly defeated Sunday. Free pass in 12th gives Orioles 3-2 win BALTIMORE (AP) - Mike Henneman walked Brady Anderson with the bases loaded in the 12th inning Sunday, giving the Baltimore Orioles a 3-2 victory over the Detroit Tigers. Detroit pitchers issued 12 walks in the game, including four to Anderson. Tigers pitchers walked 35 batters in the four-game series. Henneman (0-1) entered the game in the 11th inning but didn't get anyone out in the 12th. Craig Worthington doubled and Joe Orsulak was intentionally walked. Billy Ripken's bunt single loaded the bases and Henneman walked Anderson on a 3-1 pitch. Gregg Olson (1-0), the fourth Orioles pitcher, threw 2 2/3 hitless innings to earn the victory. Cecil Fielder's two-run homer in the fourth off Jeff Ballard staked Jack Morris to a 2-0 lead. Morris allowed three hits in the first six innings, but Joe Orsulak led off the seventh with his first home run of the season. One out later, Anderson singled. Edwin Nunez got Phil Bradley to pop out but Jerry Don Gleaton relieved and walked pinch-hitter Randy Milligan. Urbano Lugo then walked Cal Ripken to load the bases but Lugo got Mickey Tettleton on a flyout to get out of the jam. Worthington's second home run of the season tied the score in the eighth against Lugo. Braves 3, Reds 1 CINCINNATI (AP) - The Cincinnati Reds finally lost, falling to the Atlanta Braves 3-1 Sunday after starting the season with a team- record nine straight victories. Dale Murphy's three-run homer in the first inning helped the Braves and their seven-game losing streak. Tom Glavine (1-2) held the Reds, who had been batting .337, to seven hits in 7 2/3 innings. He gave up Todd Benzinger's home run in the seventh and left in the eighth after Chris Sabo's two-out single. Reliever Mike Stanton walked Billy Hatcher, loading the bases. But Barry Larkin, who began the game leading the majors with a .564 average, ended the threat by grounding out. Stanton got -his second save. Murphy hit his second home run of the season off Tom Browning (2- 1). Jeff Blauser and Jim Presley singled sharply ahead of Murphy's homer. Pistons top conference with 111-106 win oN AUBURN HILLS (AP)- Bill Laimbeer's jumper with 25.6 seconds left gave the Detroit Pistons a season-ending 111-106 victory over the Chicago Bulls Sunday at the Palace. Both teams now head for the NBA playoffs. The defending champion Pistons, who finish the season with a record of 59-23 to lead the Eastern Conference, will face the eighth-seeded Indiana Pacers in the first round. The third-ranked Bulls (55-27) will play the sixth-seeded Milwaukee Bucks. er Chicago The Bulls had the ball twice in the final 25 seconds but Michael Jordan missed a short jumper, then missed a desperation three-pointer in the last few seconds. Laimbeer and Isiah Thomas converted two free throws each in the last 13 seconds to clinch the victory. Detroit led 105-99 with 1:15 to play, but the Bulls scored seven points in 27 seconds to take a one- point lead with 36.5 seconds remaining. The Pistons open the playoffs at home Thursday.
