Well, nothing happened. Sorry. Tune in next year. In other words, no one ripped down China Gate's awning this year. Ann Arbor experienced no earthquakes, nor any national championships. Ann Arbor didn't have to experience Bill Frieder this year either. There were no midnight departures, no Rose Bowl championships. But in reality a lot happened, seemingly more off the field than on. Consider this, at the start of the 1989 calendar year, Michigan seems to have a very stable athletic program. The football coach sits in the same chair for he has for the last 20 years, and has recently assumed the reigns of athletic director. The basketball coach is a Michigan man, a graduate of this university, and has had a winning record for a number of years. The baseball coach continues to stack up win after win. Isn't this the way life at Michigan is supposed to be? Quiet, peaceful, and no hell being raised? Now, fast forward to today. There's a new athletic director, football coach, basketball coach and new baseball coach - not to mention a new volleyball coach. And the women's basketball team made the NCAA tournament. Talk about change. What a year. This in mind, we present our awards for the best and worst of Ann Arbor sports 1989-90. Biggest Moment: Bo Retiring It's be a chauvinist, macho thing to say, but certain men just aren't supposed to cry. Yet, there stood the man of men, Glenn E. "Bo" Schembechler, looking out and into the cameras and slew of reporters, crying. "The toughest thing I ever had to do was give up my football team..." he said, choking back the tears, and pausing. "But, I'm doing it." The man who singularly symbolized Michigan football since 1%9 said the upcoming Rose Bowl would be his swan song. No more Bo. No more sideline tantrums. No more sunglasses, baseball cap, and headset. Bo was gone. Didn't seem right then, still doesn't now - and it won't seem right next fall against Notre Dame. But fact is fact, regardless of feelings. Bo's address announcing his l 'Feeling under the weather? The best place to T l1 uour Prescription- ' . n p retirement received the billing usually accorded a presidential address. All three local affiliates covered Bo's farewell live. One channel had a 30 minute special on Bo which preempted Nightline. After that sad December day, no one doubted who really controlled the state of Michigan. It was Bo. And everyone at the University cried a little with Bo that day. Coach of the Year: Bud VanDeWege Women's basketball coach Bud VanDeWege sure has had a turnaround from last year. In last year's Best of Ann Arbor sports report one paragraph read, "With this year's smelly 5-13 Big Ten record, VanDeWege was unable and unwilling to successfully communicate with his players. This is Michigan, Bud." However or whatever VanDeWege communicated this year surely worked. He led the Wolverines to the finest season ever in women's basketball history at Michigan, racking up a 20 win season, 11 conference wins, an NCAA tournament birth, and an NCAA tournament win. VanDeWege was named Big Ten Coach of the Year. VanDeWege answered the challenge this season - a season which may have been pivotal to his future at Michigan. After starting the Big Ten season at a typical 1-4, the Wolverines soon found themselves on a different path - one including including a seven game conference winning streak and a trip to the NCAA's. Athlete of the Year: Mike Barrowman Here is a list of what swimmer Mike Barrowman did not do this year: rush for 100-yards in Michigan Stadium, shoot two free throws with three seconds left, score a hat trick, or hit a grand slam. Despite such shortcomings, we gave him the award anyway. Barrowman set a new NCAA 100- yard breaststroke record this season after setting a 100-meter breaststroke world record this summer. For his feats Barrowman was named NCAA Swimmer of the Year. He's done all of this without letting it go to his head - a feat in itself. Only a gold medal in the Olympics (and the fabulous Goodwill Games) eludes him. Barrowman's is a low profile sport and unfortunately the glamor and the spotlight often eludes him on this campus. He's short, doesn't possess any outstanding exterior features like a football or 0 STUCK BURGER-I Tired of burgers? Aspire to someth Subway sub.
