(At Showcase - 12:40,5:15, 7:40; Ann Arbor - call for times) Nuns on the Run Not to be confused with Nuns With the Runs, this more respectable comedy stars Monty Python's Eric Idle as one of two crooks who steals millions from the mob and hides out in a convent disguised as nuns. Do you think it'll have a shower scene and have them sharing a bed with female nuns? (At Briarwood - 12:15, 2:30, 4:30, 7:00, 9:15, 11:30) Opportunity Knocks Dana Carvey (NL's Church Lady) is a con man who masquerades as an Ivy League snob among the snobs of Chicago. (At Showcase -call for times, if you really must; Fox Village - 7:00, 9:30, 11:30L Campus Cinema FRIDAY Lady Chatterly's Lover (Marc Allegret, 1955) MLB3 7pm/DBL CG Like the D.H. Lawrence novel it was taken from, Lady Chatterly's Lover was censored upon its release. Censors charged that the movie presents adultery as desirable and proper behavior. Tame by today's standards, it tells the story of a young English noblewoman who has her husband's tactit approaval of her affairs. French with subtitles. Swann in Love (Volker Schlondorff, 1984) MLB3 9pm/DBL CG Jeremy Irons plays Charles Swann, a wealthy cosmopolitan with ties to the aristocracy, whose passionate affair with Odette de Crecy, a beautiful woman of dubious provenance, provokes in him an obsessive jealousy that threatens not only his sanity, but his social standing as well. Adapted from the novel by Marcel Proust, Swann is a beautifully evocative portrait of Parisian high society in the years leading up to the turn of the century, as well as an unusual love story. Sleeper (Woody Allen, 1973) MLB4 7pm & 10:30/DBL Med Woody plays a neurotic (what, Woody neurotic?) but meek health- food store proprietor who goes to the hospital for an operation and wakes up in 2173 to a world where he is capable of winning a Miss America contest, criminals are forced to watch Howard Cosell re- runs, and a peculiar little ball has replaced the joint as drug conduit of choice. Let's give this one a 10 on the humor scale. A Looney Tunes cartoon precedes the movie. Annie Hall (Woody Allen, 1977) MLB4 8:45/DBL Med Shall we reverse the criticism, and call this movie WhenAkiy Met Annie? Annie Hall follows the (neurotic) Alvy Singer (Allen) through his relationship with Annie (Diane Keaton). Alvy still can't quite get the hang of romance after a marriage to Carol Kane, one of his real life wives, and a petit fling with teenager Mariel Hemingway. Classic scenes included, free of charge, like the lobster scene in the kitchen, and Alvy's aversion to authority in the form of a mutilated driver's license. Lots of good California-bashing, too. A Looney Tunes cartoon precedes the movie. Twilight of the Cockroaches (Hiroaki Yoshida, 1987) AudA 7:30 & 9:30 AAFC In this innovative satire, Yoshida crafts an allegorical tale stemming from his fear that Japan will have the popularity of cockroaches if it continues to aggravate other countries with selfish trade practices. A clever combination of live action and animation, the film is shot from the point of view of roached living in a comfortable Japanese home. A Midwest premiere. SATURDAY Beetlejuice (Tim Burton, 1988) MLB4 7pm, 8:40 & 10:20 CG Michael Keaton, AKA that Bat-guy in the black leotards, hams it up as the ghost Betelgeuse. The ghost helps a newly-dead couple adjust to the afterlife, and to the irritating family who's just moved into their home. With Geena Davis and Winona Ryder. Amazing special effects make Beetlejuice a kind of live-action cartoon. Jean de Florette (Claude Berri, 1986) MLB3 7:15/DBL Med A cocky French farmer schemes with his simpleton nephew to acquire some farmland by making sure the new owners never discover an all-important natural spring on the property. Exquisitely filmed, very powerful. A Looney Tunes cartoon precedes the movie. Manon of the Spring (Claude Berri, 1986) MLB3 9:30/DBL Med The conclusion of Jean de Florele, in which a lovely young shepherdess learns the truth behind her father's death and vows revenge on the scheming pair of farmers. Berri tells the story slowly, savoring every moment leading to the unanticipated conclusion. A Looney Tunes cartoon precedes the movie. Twilight of the Cockroaches (Hiroaki Yoshida, 1987) Aud A 7:30 & 9:30 AAFC See Friday's listing. The Blues Brothers (John Landis, 1980) Hillel 9:15 & 11:40 HSC Join John Belushi and Dan Ackroyd on their "mission from God" as the work to save the orphanage where they were both raised. Frankly hilarious, with rabble-rousing music and Belushi flip-flopping his way to the gospel truth, and Carrie Fisher with a Bazooka. Watch for Pee-Wee Herman (speaking in a normal voice) as the waiter in the restaurant scene.
