Page 10 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, April 20, 1990 Folkies still going strong By Mark Swartz THE highlight of the Ark's 25th anniversary season is, predictably, a great big concert featuring all of your favorite acts. Ho hum. A bunch of those silly folkies are sure to show up with their guitars so they can sing some beautiful songs, tell some touching stories, make every- body feel better about themselves and all that junk. You know, the junk that music is all about. The lineup for Saturday's concert at Hill Auditorium is typically stellar. Dave Bromberg, bluegrass blues- man extraordinaire, used to help people like Chubby Checker and Bob Dylan make records. For that, he was called a "sideman." For a couple of decades he's been making records of his own. The latest is called Sideman Serenade and fea- tures such accomplished sidemen as Jackson Browne and Jorma Kauko- nen. In concert, Bromberg's voice breaks in all the right places and so do his guitar strings. John Prine writes some of the saddest, funniest songs on record. Ever since he penned "There's a hole in Daddy's arm where all the money goes/ And Jesus died for nothing I suppose," in a song called "Sam Stone" in 1973 a few lucky people have known about him. But there's no point keeping John Prine a se- cret. His is the kind of gift worth sharing. Prine will be joined by a backup band called The National Re- covery Act. 0 Comedy Company toes the line The Comedy Company has been around for 10 whole days - um, years, and they're going to herald countless future ones with their new and nicely punned new production, I Stubbed my Big Show. With sketches like ''Those Meddling Kids," "Shopping for Ties," "Cafe Pretentious," "Planet of the Cheerleaders" and "The Wacky Nutty Zoo," you simply can't go wrong. Give them a chance tonight and tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Mendelssohn Theatre. Tickets are $3.50 in advance at the Union, $4 at the door at the League - surely a relic of the University's old gender-segregated and discriminatory days.
