ARTS "The Michigan Daily Thursday, January 18, 1990 Nasty boys Wisconsin's Killdozer tears up the town Page 7 -- - -- - - BY ROB FLAGGERT AND BOB WYROD CLUB Heidelberg serves up a fresh but certainly fetid alternative to the vaguely slick drivel which has be- come the uniform college music cir- cuit. Wisconsin-based bastards Kill- dozer have finally been roped into bringing their crack-scratching, phlegm-balling raunch to Ann Arbor for a "one night only" musically in- duced nightmare of aggro-rock with locals Wig. Formed some (read six or seven) 'years ago by cheeseheads Michael Gerald, and brothers Dan and Bill Hobson, Killdozer has managed to find footing in what can only be de- scribed as nightmarish, raunch-core and make a perpetual dent/scratch/ laceration in alternative music as "those guys from Wisconsin with the big sound." Since then their he- donistic covers of well-known songs (including "Cinnamon Girl" from their debut album Snakeboy, Neil Diamond's all-time worst, "I Am... I Said" from Little Baby Buntin', and, most recently, a cover of "Nasty" (which out-Nastied Janet's version) have been the medium through which they have become most widely known. Gerald, bassist as well as voice of Killdozer, has strewn these versions liberally with his trademark growl- ing, bringing to life the "Voice of Gerald" - a voice of authority even God wouldn't question. This percep- tion of Killdozer as a cover band (which may have been started shortly after the release of Snakeboy with the cover EP Burl) unfortunately en- gages a wide ingnorance of their original stuff, which has shone through since the first album, but raises its preposterously beautiful grunge-head most majestically on the most recent album, 12 Point Buck. These boys have, throughout their discography, retained their em- brace with raunch simplicity, yet have certainly matured from their original Laughing Hyenas-times- three outbursts to the more melodic gut-wrenching sound they show on Buck. Gerald's mega-bass and howling, moaning, growling, story-like vo- cals have remained a constant throughout, as have the belligerent sounds from the brothers Hobson. Dan's seemingly tireless, slow thun- der drumming, and Bill's guitar de- bauchery have taken the band beyond the foot-pedal mastermind guitar that shapes the likes of Dinosaur jr., past the furious guitar riffs that are Nir- vana and Mudhoney, and into the unexplored realm of darkness and mystery. The unpolished, unrefined, id-tunage that is Killdozer. Buck contains all that is great about Killdozer, all the power, all the aggression, all the all. Dan's drumming is exhausting as ever, al- ways seeming to be on the very verge of collapsing onto his toms, and brother Bill's haggish riffs virtu- ally bleed on songs like "Lupus," a tribute to Flannery O'Connor, as well as the album's single which one local record peddler/store owner Killdozer is a meat, potatoes and cheese kind of band - three guys from Wisconsin on a mission to give you insomnia. They don't come around often, so grab this chance to legally fry your brain. dubbed '89's best. The album also has the best of Gerald. His dirgish bass and haunting vocals on songs such as Richard ("My name is Richard, but you can call me Dick") round the album out to be one of their best yet. And oh, live... these noise- makers from the guts of Hades are not to be missed on stage as their many nightmarish shows across the nation, and last year's European tour, earned them the label of "The Meanest, Blackest, Deffest, Hardcore Motherfuckers From the Scrotum of Hell." We caught their act on the Snakeboy tour opening for label- mates Scratch Acid in a trailer park somewhere in Western Michigan -- bare with the vagueness, it all seemed like something from an opium-induced nightmare.
