Baseball vs. Minnesota Friday and Saturday (Doubleheaders), 1 p.m. Fisher Stadium SPORTS Women's Tennis vs. Notre Dame Thursday, 2 p.m. Track and Tennis Building The Michigan Daily Stone, Harlock net co-captain honors Wednesday, April 11, 1990 Page 9 M' - Huron matchup by David Hyman Daily Hockey Writer At the annual Deker's Club Hockey Banquet held this past Satur- day, the Michigan hockey team elected next year's team captains. The returning players voted ju- nior Don Stone as one of the co- captains for the 1990-91 season. That came as little surprise since Stone ranked fifth on the team in scoring this season, and will be one of only four seniors on next year's squad However, heads turned when the players voted first-year defenseman David Harlock as the other co- captain. "I leave it up to the players for whom they feel will be the type of leaders they want on the ice," Michigan coach Red Berenson said. "(David's) not future captain mate- rial, but can lead right now, and ob- viously the team felt that way also." Naming a senior as captain fol- lows tradition, but it is exceptional when this honor is bestowed upon a sophomore. However, the Wolver- ines decided that Harlock is someone they can rally around. "I think it's great. He's good in the lockerroom and the team all gets along with him," Harlock's defen- sive partner Patrick Neaton said. "He might seem quiet at times, but he usually has things to say before games and between periods. "It's a little unlikely for a sophomore to be named captain. It was an initial surprise, but if every- one on the team voted, it was a good choice," Neaton added. Harlock himself was initially somewhat awed. "I was pretty much surprised. I knew I had a few votes by speaking to some people, but I wasn't too op- timistic," Harlock said. "I was taken aback by it at first, but if my team had enough confidence in me, that instills even more confidence in me for next year." In other selections, senior goal- tender Warren Sharples earned his second Hal Downes Trophy in three seasons, the award given to the team's Most Valuable Player. He completed his final and finest season with a 20-10-6 mark and 3.24 goals against average. The goalie was also named team MVP after his sophomore year. Sharples received the Carl Isaac- son Award for best student-athlete as well. First-year left winger David Roberts also garnered two awards. He earned the Doc Losh Trophy as the team's top scorer, tallying 21 goals and 32 assists. He was also rewarded as the most colorful rookie by The Dekers Club. Roberts will add these accolades to his CCHA Rookie of the Year honor, awarded by the league coaches last month. Senior Alex Roberts captured the Vic Heyliger Trophy for the best de- fenseman, as well as the Alton Simms Trophy for most improved player. Senior center Mike Moes netted the Howard Colby Award for sportsmanship for the second straight year. washed out, by Jeff Sheran Daily Baseball Writer Somebody up there must not want the Wolverines to play Eastern Michigan. For the second consecutive week Michigan's doubleheader with the Hurons was rained out. No decision has been made regarding the rescheduling of the games, but those responsible might want to investigate the availability of the Silverdome. Michigan coach Bill Freehan had hoped to experiment with several non-starters during the twin bill, in an attempt to reexamine his struggling squad. The Wolverines have a 14-14 record, but are 2-6 in the Big Ten. Freehan has repeatedly cited the team's lack of concentration as the cause for its woes, and he hopes to find a cure before Michigan's next conference match-up: a two- doubleheader weekend series with Minnesota at Fisher Stadium. Senior righthander Rick Leonard, who holds the fifth spot in the four- starter rotation, was set to pitch against the Hurons before the rainout. Leonard should receive the nod today, as long as the forecasted snow decides to precipitate elsewhere. Today's action pits the Wolverines against the University of Detroit. 0@"@ again Michigan left winger David Roberts skates for the puck earlier this season against Western Michigan. Roberts netted outstanding rookie and leading scorer honors at Saturday's Dekers Club banquet. Roberts had already garnered the CCHA Rookie of the Year award last month.
