COOPER Continued from page 1 game caught by Cooper. "She calls a really good game for me. I'm confident when Julie is behind the plate. She's really good at what she does, and shows a lot of leadership." Cooper, true to all good catchers, dedicates herself to the position, and will make sacrifices for it. Usually after catching a game for junior pitcher Andrea Nelson she has to put her hand on ice. "Andrea throws a lot of heat," Cooper quietly states. Unfortunately, she has made one too many sacrifices and recently sprained her catching hand. She has not caught in the last few games. While nursing the sprain, Cooper has been playing in the outfield, and has handed over her usual spot to sophomore Bridget Fitzpatrick. But Cooper is getting antsy, "As soon as it's better I'll be back." Good friend and teammate Sara Dyksterhouse is familiar with Cooper's personality, "For a junior on the team she shows a lot of leadership and will probably be captain of the team next year. She's really consistent in her play and her attitude. She's never too up or too down. She's someone who wants to win, but is also someone you can complain to when you're in a bad mood, or unhappy about the game." Besides being a defensive stand- out who committed only 3 errors in 49 games last year, and was named to the Bud Lite All-Tournament team the same year, Cooper is the team's leading base stealer. Last year she stole 11 times, this year she will most likely have more. Coach Carol Hutchins says, "Julie possesses great speed. In the past I didn't steal too much. This year, we're going to give her more opportunities to go. As a player she has a lot of potential and over her last two years as a starter, she has improved a lot." Cooper is anxiously anticipating more base stealing freedom. "I think it's better that I can be more aggressive. There's a lot of times last year when I'm out on the bases and she doesn't steal me and I'm thinking 'come on, come on, steal me."' Now she has the green light. There are a few simple rules in Cooper's base stealing handbook, "When I'm stealing a base, my concentration is on second base. If it's a wide throw I'm gonna slide on the inside of the base. If it's a low throw I'm gonna try to slide on the outside of the base. I think that stealing bases has a lot to do with the way you slide." She slides better than anyone on the team. The only time a Michigan base runner is allowed to steal without a signal from a coach is on a delay steal. A delay steal occurs when the catcher is not paying attention, and slowly lofts the ball back to the pitcher. If the runner thinks she can beat out the time between catcher to pitcher, to second base, she goes. However, only the fastest runners get the green light from Hutchins. Of course, Cooper is one. So how did she ever get so good? She learned from her father. "As I was growing up my father and I did everything together. I don't know how many times he was out in the yard hitting me grounders, playing catch with me. And he got big old blisters on his thumb because I was making him hit me grounders." He's still involved in his daughters athletic career. He can be found in the stands at almost every home contest, giving Julie pointers after the games. He's so involved that he is now president of the Diamond Club, the booster club for the softball team. Cooper has grown by leaps and bounds while at Michigan. Besides constant improvement on the field, she's improved in the classroom as well. "My freshman year I hardly put much emphasis on school at all. But since then, everything has started to revolve around school. I'm more up- tight now when I get a bad grade. I'm more concerned with getting 0. Sounds like the confession of the normal Michigan student. But besides being a softball player, she has one major difference from the normal Michigan student. She's engaged to be married. Cooper will marry her college sweetheart, Michigan hockey player Tim Helber. Helber, a senior, plans to open a construction company with his cousin. Cooper hopes to break into the sports marketing field. There are still many days between now and the wedding and Cooper plans to make the most of her remaining time at the university. Though she is finding it consistently more difficult to juggle school, softball and a fiancee, she's making it. She looks forward to playing the bulk of this season and all of next year, too. "I just have fun playing. As long as I have fun, everything is all right. If the fun goes out of it, I don't even want to play anymore. I like to go out there and smile and have a great time - be relaxed and play the game. It makes playing so much easier." No one ever said softball didn't come easy for Julie Cooper. But she doesn't make it look easy. DO YOU... /specialize in word processing /run a test preparation service OR /furnish resumes? Advertise in b e i t fgan Duthj Classifieds Call 764-0557 NOW!
