Page 10 Women golfers' trip not so sunny by Rod Loewenthal Daily Sports Writer The state of Arizona, home to perennial favorites such as Barry Goldwater, blue tortilla chips and Bill Frieder, proved not to be such a familiar place to the women's golf team last weekend. The Wolverines finished eighth in a nine team field at the Hawkeye Rio Rico Invitational in Nogales, Arizona. Nebraska won the invita- tional with a score of 925, while Michigan finished with 992. "We had some good scores and some bad scores," coach Sue LeClaire said, "but the girls should have done better." Mary Hartman recorded the team's low score with a 75, but the other golfers did not fare as well. Even the weather proved disappointing. "We thought we'd go out to 75-85 temperatures," LeClaire said. "But on Saturday afternoon it got quite cold and windy and we had to play in our rain~ gear." It was obvious to LeClaire that the problem was not in the players' physical ability, but in their mental attitude."Their concentration level was low and that is why they did not do well," said LeClaire The golfers will have a chance to redeem themselves this weekend when they travel to Bloomington, Indiana. There, they will compete in an invitational where five out of the twelve teams will be from the Big Ten. Coach LeClaire remains con- vinced that mental focus will be the key to her team's success. "Indiana and Ohio State will be tough," LeClaire claimed, "but our problem is getting the girls' concentration level up. They've got their golf game and golf swing, now it's just a matter of getting their confidence and concentration." 99 0 Bg Teaealstanins ..Qfc Y : >' c c . i>'vii r '' Buerkel drives in three in 5-2 win :::. :.W :v:::.L:.":t:: :. t;?":"::1 ......... ........ ................ . by Theodore Cox Daily Baseball Writer stifles ippewas [1.::iiiiCt a ..... .M..l.......:..:................. .......... ...... .. ....... ........... ........... ...:: :.. . .. . 21d :... .... con sii 'inc f0ii..4 3y c ...........d:>'i(cc n'" t:" r en " c < 5z , i3 ? c o n ly.....). .. .. ... ... .. ... ... .... . ...................... ..................... ........ ...... . ..3+..... TimF~nreIy~BM.1:81.99 Out came the sun, and the Wolverines shined. The Michigan baseball team (13- 11) bounced back after three straight losses to beat Central Michigan (9- 7) yesterday afternoon, 5-2, in Mt. Pleasant. "We haven't had too many easy wins," Michigan coach Bill Freehan said. "This is the first time we've played them in a long time. We were the most talented team." The combination of a two day layoff due to inclement weather gave Freehan a chance to showcase his top four starting pitchers, each of whom threw for two innings. Five Michigan pitchers in all made appearances. Michigan spread out their scor- ing, due mostly to the hitting of sophomore Steve Buerkel who drove in the first three Michigan runs. Buerkel went 2-4 in the contest. Buerkel began the first inning with his first homer of the season. The Chippewas struck back in the bottom of the inning with a homerun by Matt Bauer off of Wolverine starter Russell Brock. That was the only run Brock allowed before first-year player Dennis Konuszewski took over the mound. The nighthander picked up his first win (1-1) of the season after Michigan took the lead in the third inning. Buerkel knocked home the second Wolverine run after he slapped a single after Freehan signaled for a hit-and-run. The centerfielder struck again in the fifth inning, when he drove itt his third run on a fielder's choice to put Michigan up 3-1. Central Michigan could not get: lBuerkel out in the eighth as h reached base on a Chippewa error:. EHe reached third on a Tim Flannelly isingle. The base hit extended iFlannelly's hitting streak to 22 games. The sophomore leads the team with a batting average of .386 Buerkel then scored after Andy Fairman hit into a double play. - The final Wolverine run came in the ninth, when catcher Todd Winston knocked in co-captain Phil Price. Kirt Ojala and Jason Pfaff followed Konuszewski in the pitch- ing rotation. Todd Marion finished the game in the ninth, picking uO his fifth save of the season. Central Michigan hasn't faired too well against Michigan over the ycars. The Chippewas have a serie's record of 13-35-1 against the Wolverines. Michigan will return to its Big Ten schedule this weekend after struggling in league play early in the season. Vz Freehan ............ ..... Michigan softball hampered by series of delays with U of D by David Schechter Daily Sports Writer The Michigan softball team was scheduled to play the University of Detroit yesterday but the game was called on account of rain. Sort of. Actually, yesterday's game was originally scheduled to be played in Detroit at the U of D campus but Tuesday's weather conditions ren- dered the field unplayable and forced the Titans to move the game to Ann Arbor. All the makings for a beautiful day of softball were present: sunny skies and warm temperatures. How- ever one major ingredient was missing - the Titans. Detroit failed to field a team to compete against the Wolverines for yesterday's sche- duled double header. Captain Jenny Allard was disappointed by the no show, "It's too bad we couldn't play but they didn't have enough people for a game." Michigan needed to play U of D in order to play themselves out of pre-season sub par performances that have left the Wolverines with a less than celebrated start. The team was hoping to gain a good deal of momentum by sweeping the doubleheader before going into their first Big Ten matchup. Michigan will face Min- nesota this Friday and Saturday. Unfortunately for the Wolverines they will go into the most important part of the season on a full week layoff. Coach Carol Hutchins was hoping that the games against De- troit would give her team an opportunity to get some solid com- petition in before a big game like Minnesota. Michigan's record against the U of D Titans is an impressive 18-3 The Wolverines must now hope the layoff does not effect their conference performance. Michigan's record against the Golden Gophers is tied at an even 14-14. The team hopes to widen that margin during the weekend competition. 1990 Men's 1. Indiana Northwestern Minnesota 4.
