The Michigan Daily - Wednesday, January 17, 1990 - Page 13 'M' tennis star gains *national ranking by Eric Berkman Daily Sports Writer Michigan sophomore David Kass was ranked 17th nationally in the recently-released 1990 Volvo Tennis/Collegiate rankings. The Columbus, Ohio native was an All-Big Ten selection as a first- ~year player last year with an overall singles record of 20-6. In addition, as a doubles performer, Kass recorded an overall record of ten victories and no defeats. "David is one of the 10 or 12 players in the. country that will have a run at ther national singles championship - he's as good as . anyone in the U.S.," men's MseA coach Brian Eisner said. "It's great that he's ranked 17th, but I don't Kass *pay much atten- tion to rankings at time of the year. I know what he's capable of achieving." coThe computer-based rankings, compiled by the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Association, are based on fall play in all ITCA sanctioned tournaments. This fall, Kass reached the quarterfinals of the Volvo All- American Tournament (one of four collegiate Grand Slam tournaments), and won the Sectional Tournament at Notre Dame. Kass also won one of three matches at the National Clay Court Championships in Hilton Head, South Carolina, the second Grand Slam event, despite being unable to practice on clay ~>prior to the tournament. "Whatehe has achieved doesn't startle me," Eisner said. "The fact of the matter is that he was regarded as one of the finest in the nation coming into college. He'd played in a number of pro events as an amateur and had been very successful." Foremost among them, All-American 150-pounder Larry Gotcher has compiled a 1-3 dual meet record for the Wolverines. Gotcher cited that problems with maintaining his weight has been the reason for his ineffectiveness. He added that his knee has not yet fully recovered from an injury sustained several weeks ago and has hampered his ability to burn off extra weight. "From now on, I'm just gonna be stricter about my weight," Gotcher said. "It's not gonna be easy." The senior co-captain has increased his practice schedule to stay in better condition for the Big Ten season. Conference rules dictate That wrestlers are allowed only a two-pound leeway, one pound less than "was allowed in their previous competition. "Me and (167 pounder) Lanny Green are working out twice as musi as before," Gotcher said. "We're working out in the morning before running, and at night after afternoon practice." Teammates have noted the increased workload. "Gotcher will get bck on track," first-year redshirt James Feldkamp said. Ironically, it 'as Feldkamp who relinquished his starting position at 142 lbs. to fellow redshirt James Rawls because "cutting weight was taking time away from school." Feldkamp will now serve as a backup for Gotcher at 150 lbs.T Apparently, Gotcher is not worried about preparing himself for the Big Ten season. "There's no question in my mind that I'm gonna win the iBig Tens," he said. EYE HATE THIS STUPID THING:126-pound junior Salem Yaffai will have to wear a protective face mask for the remainder of the season, because of an injury to his eye two weeks ago. After being poked in'the eye during practice, it was found that Yaffai's tear duct was seveshad. Doctors inserted a small plastic tube as a replacement. "If we can compete with as much good luck as in the past we had unfortunate luck, we should be a contender," Henry said. The team should also be strong because it is composed of a veteran squad, including a dozen returning seniors. Only two Big Ten runners graduated last year. "It's difficult to point to one or two," Henry said, but rather, "all are expected to contribute significantly to the team." S track team He did, however, single out returning three-time All-American distance runner Mindy Rowand as one reason that the team will be strong this season. He expects her to once again contribute greatly to the team's success. . In addition, the team has a few rookies to watch out for. First-year student Ronda Ricketts from Uniondale, New York recorded a high-school best long jump of 20 and 1/4 feet. The team will also look for significant help from first-year students Molly McClimmon, one of the top Michigan cross country runners this fall, and Julie Victor in the discus and shot put.
