havior at their prior April 1 rallies."
With permit in hand and sound
system in place, up to 5000 people
attended yesterday's NORML rally
and Hash Bash to hear speakers argu-
ing for the legalization of marijuana
and opposing Proposal B. Proposal
B, which appears on today's city
election ballot, would raise the five
dollar pot fine to $25 for a first of-
fense.
Safe Drugs Movement member
Dana Beal welcomed the crowd to
the rally and announced, "Marijuana
prohibition doesn't work. Stop the
white powders, stop the war on the
people and stop disguising the drug
war."
The speaker which drew the most
attention from the crowd was Ken-
tucky Democratic gubernatorial can-
didate Gatewood Galbraith, who is.
running on the platform of mari-
juana legalization. Galbraith told the
crowd that if elected, "No one will;
ever go to jail again in the state of

Kentucky for marijuana use."
Among the other speakers present
at the rally was James Marsh,
Democratic candidate for the Fourth
Ward in today's city elections.
Marsh urged people to reject Pro-
posal B. While Marsh commended
ralliers, he said protest must be
turned into action by voting to show
government that "we won't buy into
this drug hysteria."
As the speakers concluded, a
group calling themselves the Free-
dom Fighters marched up the steps
of the library to the beat of drums
and tamborines chanting, "Legalize
it, don't criticize it."
LSA senior Stephan Ferrand at-
tended the rally and agreed with
many of the speakers. Ferrand said,
"Look at the number of people here
who are stoned. It is an obvious sign
that the war on drugs is failing. The
solution is to legalize it, control it
and regulate it."
Richard Birkett, coordinator of
NORML, was pleased with the rally
turnout considering the bad weather.
Birkett sarcastically "thanked" the
University for its "free publicity"
given to NORML with its with-
drawal of the permit.

Celebrating 25 years of advocacy,
research and counseling, the Center
for the Education of Women is hold-
ing an anniversary conference today
in the Rackham building, fourth
floor.
Carol Hollenshead, director of the
center, said the conference will be a
"time to reflect on (women's past)
and to think about some of the chal-
lenges ahead and some of the victo-
ries behind (women)."
Alice Kessler-Harris, professor of
history at Temple University, will
deliver the keynote address at 9:15
on the history and future of women
and work.
A public policy panel follows at
10:15. Discussion will center on
gender issues and formation of pol-
icy at state, local and federal levels.
The afternoon lectures commence
at 1:15 with Paula Giddings.
