Bowling Green beat Michigan, 8-7, at Steller Field in Ohio. Michigan (10-7) built up a 7-3 lead by the sixth inning, only to suffer through a five run onslaught by Bowling Green (10-6) in the bottom of the inning. Brian Koelling belted a 3-run- homer to begin the scoring for the Falcons off of Michigan pitcher Terry Woods. Koelling, who went 3- for-4, was just the second pitcher Woods had faced. The Sophomore had just replaced starter Dennis Konuszewski, who went 5 2/3 innings, allowing four earned runs on five hits. Shawn Gillenwater followed Koelling's blow with a single. Senior Jason Welch followed with a double to tie the game at seven, before Kyle Hockman smacked a single that scored Welch for the win. The Wolverines started the scor- ing in the first inning. Sophomore . Tim Flannelly began with a single. 9 Senior Co-captain Phil Price re- ceived a walk, before Todd Winston Z doubled to right-center to give V Michigan a 2-0 advantage. C It was Winston's first double of v the year. The catcher went 2-for-5 for the game, producing 3 RBIs. The Wolverines came up with three runs in the top of the sixth to put them up 7-3. The inning began with a walk to Michigan outfielder Dan Ruff. He went to second on a. single by Dave Everly. Matt Morse then nailed his second homer of the season. The second baseman went 2- for-5 for the game, including 4 RBIs. The Wolverines collected 13 hits in all. Tim Flannelly connected the most hits on the Michigan side. The sophomore third baseman went 3- for-4. Honors wrap up a special season by Phil Green Daily Basketball Writer After years in the Big Ten basement, Michigan's women's basketball team finally climbed the con- ference's stairs. Before the season the conference coaches figured the Wolverines would spend the year in their usual last- place location - predicting Michigan for eighth place. Michigan, however, saw the season unfolding a different way, shooting for the upper division and a possible NCAA tournament bid. Led by a core group of seniors, this year's Wolverines accomplished these goals. Michigan reached the 20-win plateau for the first time in team history, including a team high seven game winning streak that helped the team earn its first ever NCAA berth. They began the season with a strong 8-2 non- conference record and it looked as if their lofty expectations from the pre-season might actually be reached. The Wolverines journey up the conference rankings was not always so smooth, though. As the Big Ten season began, the team's upward mobility stalled. Following a conference opening home victory over league doormat Minnesota, the Wolverines went on a four game skid including a devastating road sweep at Ohio State and Indiana. Michigan quickly found itself establishing residency in a familiar place, the cellar. Senior co-captain Tanya Powell recalls how coach Bud VanDeWege stepped in to initiate some changes. "After the Ohio State and Indiana trip the coach just sat the seniors down and we just talked about what we wanted to do. If we wanted to make the NCAA * tournament, if we wanted to finish in the upper division we had to take it in our own hands and work harder and I guess everyone decided they wanted it." Shortly after the senior-coach conversation the Wolverines got their motor running and began venturing back up through the conference. First-year center Trish Andrew led the way as Michigan stomped over Wisconsin. On the ensuing weekend Hall played the game of her career as the Wolverines went to overtime to defeat intrastate rival Michigan State in what coach Bud VanDeWege called "the biggest win of my career." Little did he know at the time, but VanDeWege would be saying that a few more times during the season. The Wolverines rebounded from a tough road loss in their next game against nationally ranked Purdue to defeat the University of Illinois for their first conference road win. The victory started them on a seven-game winning streak, marching Michigan over the rest of the Big Ten. Along the way the Wolverines defeated Ohio State for , the first time since 1981, only the second time ever, and "the biggest win" of VanDeWege's career, and upset No.15 Northwestern in Evanston for yet another "biggest win" of VanDeWege's career. Many players stepped up to power Michigan during the run. Although VanDeWege and the players consistently emphasized this team aspect for the stretch, the key might just have been Leslie Spicer's re-acquired shooting touch. She averaged over 15 points per game during the streak including 20 and 22 points respectively in a crucial road weekend sweep over Wisconsin and Northwestern to become the team's second leading scorer. "It was just that my role was different," Spicer said. "Coming off the bench earlier in the season I was more of a sparkplug, but then as a starter I was looked to more as a scorer." When Michigan finally lost it came at the hands of Purdue on a 3-point shot with less than one minute remaining. Still, the Wolverines were in the upper division of the Big Ten, with a conference record standing at 10-6, good for a fourth place tie with Ohio State. They had reached one of the plateaus they strived for all season. A split of the final two regular season games left the team's record at 19-9 overall, 11-7 in the Big Ten; Michigan became a team "on the bubble" for the NCAA tournament. On Sunday, March 11, the Wolverines dream came true as they were one of the record five Big Ten teams to receive a bid - Michigan was headed to the tournament. The Wolverines played Oklahoma State on the Cowgirls' home floor in the first round. Behind 40 points from co-captains Powell and junior Carol Szczechowski, Michigan overcame a three point halftime deficit to win, allowing VanDeWege to once again claim for that "this was the biggest win of my career." Unfortunately for the Wolverines, the joyride ended the following Saturday in Raleigh, North Carolina against No.11 North Carolina State. But even though the season ended with a loss the Wolverines couldn't have asked for anything more from their magical season. "It's nice to know that all the hard work paid off, and it couldn't have come at a better time," Spicer said of her final season in a Wolverine uniform. In addition to all of the team accomplishments this year, there were some impressive individual achievements as well: Powell became Michigan's all- time leading rebounder and broke a single game Big Ten rebounding record with 17 caroms versus Purdue, Andrew led the conference in blocked shots nearly doubling her closest competitor, and VanDeWege, with all of his career biggest wins, earned Big Ten Coach of the Year honors. Michigan sophomore Tim Flannelly take a swing at Ray Fisher Stadium. The Wolverines will play in their home opener today. Michigan lost 8-7 to Bowling Green yesterday. Flannelly went 3-5 in the contest. Matheny each had two hits in the loss. Dave Freese picked up the win for Bowling Green. He came on in relief for Corey Zielinski, who left after allowing three runs in four innings. Freese went two innings, giving up four runs on five hits. Pitcher Vince Mepzger finished for Bowling Green to pick up the save. Oddly enough, Mepzger was the same pitcher who beat Michigan last year, 8-0. The Wolverines play in their home opener today at 3 p.m. against Western Michigan. The two teams split a home-and-home series last year, but Michigan leads the overall series 71-56. The Broncos are led by a trio of seniors, each of whom hit over .300 last year: Matt Mieske, Jim Lentz, and Brian Saltzgaber. This is the last game before the Big Ten season gets underway for Michigan. The Wolverines will take on Indiana this weekend. Wings out of playoffs DETROIT (AP) - Dave Andrey- chuk scored three times during a five-goal first period Tuesday as the Buffalo Sabres skated to a 6-5 victory over Detroit, eliminating the Red Wings from playoff contention. The Sabres (42-27-8) moved three points ahead of idle Montreal in the race for second place in the Adams Division and a home-ice advantage in the first round of the playoffs. The Red Wings (28-37-13), twice defending Norris Division regular- season champions, missed the playoffs for the first time since 1985-86 and the first time in Jacques Demers' four years as coach. The Sabres struck four times in a 4:53 span in the first period to take a 4-0 lead. The Red Wings, who needed to win their three remaining games and hope Minnesota lost its three, provided little support for goalie Tim Cheveldae. Alexander Mogilny started the spurt at 2:31 and Andreychuk followed 3:08 later. The Sabres increased the lead to 3-0 at 6:14 when Christian Ruuttu converted Mogilny's pass and Andreychuk earned his second of the period at 7:24 when Cheveldae misplayed his high lob from center ice. After Gerard Gallant and Randy McKay cut the lead to 4-2 midway through the period, Andreychuk completed the sixth three-goal game of his career, poking a rebound past Cheveldae for his 38th goal. Detroit's Sean Burr and Buffalo rookie Bob Corkum traded second- period goals before Steve Yzerman and Gallant narrowed the gap in the third for the Red Wings.
