Week '90 Next week, April 2-7, is S.E.R.V.E. Week '90, six days to celebrate community service at the University of Michigan. This event will bring together volunteers with community residents and organizations in need, and there are many ways for faculty, students, and staff to get involved. Consider these: -"Quarters for Kids": A three-day fundraising campaign next Tuesday- Thursday, April 3-5 on the Diag aimed at raising money for several local agencies that serve homeless children. Stop by and contribute or, better yet, help out by passing the bucket! Contact the S.E.R.V.E. office, 2211 Michigan Union, or call 936-2347 to sign up. -"Into the Streets": A day of service on Saturday, April 7 so that volunteers can work together on one-time community service projects set up throughout our area. Either call or stop by the S.E.R.V.E. Office to sign up or visit our table on the ground floor of the Michigan Union TODAY (Monday). We will be there all day from 9-5. -"A Day in the Life of Youth Service": This display will be up for five days (April 2-6) in the first floor lobby of the Michigan Union. See this Youth Service America/C.O.O.L showing which celebrates youth service in America., -"Campus Service Opportunities Fair": Your chance to meet with representatives from the many community service and social action groups on campus. Stop by the Michigan Union Ground Floor Mall on Friday, April 6 between 12-4 to find out more. -"President's Reception": A recognition reception honoring those students who are presently involved in community service. WHEN, WHERE, WHO?? Spring is here (more or less) and the time has come to help someone in need. It is the perfect way to celebrate our lives together! HELPING IS A CHAIN REACTION: PASS IT ALONG Put Project Community into your Fall Schedule! Are you thinking about new career directions and want to try out some new ideas? Do you think you would want to work with a particular population or in a certain setting? Do you mostly want to be of service to the community, maybe to kids or to the elderly? Are you feeling that the usual head-tripping classroom experience is getting really OLD? We have many options to make learning truly mean- ingful. One rewarding experience can be AFTER-SCHOOL TUTOR- ING and games with children at risk of falling through the educational cracks. We work with kids from three low- income housing sites, meeting with them at Angell and Lawton schools and at Green-Clacier community center. These are group projects, which means that all the U-M students at a site go there together twice each week. Things are never dull! Some quotes: "After meeting with the children yesterday and seeing how excited they got to be with the tutors, I feel great that I'm involved..." 'TA community social worker]... told us about the political prob- lems, drug programs, and a great deal of other things. It was kind of a quick socialization... I think the tutors and I benefitted a great deal from it." Project Community is a service-learning program that offers two, three, and four credit opportunites in Sociology 389 and Education 317. Placements ,are available at over 35 sites in four different programs: Chemical Dependency, Criminal Justice, Education, and #-lealth.
