Page 12 - The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 23, 1990 Women's track steps outside in St. Louis by Tom Kent Daily Sports Contributor The women's track team is sharpening its spikes in preparation for the opening of their 1990 outdoor season tomorrow in a non-scored meet at Washington University in St. Louis. Michigan is coming off a successful indoor season and is looking forward to getting a jump on spring with a strong performance this weekend. Several schools around the country will preview their field events in competition for the first time this year. The Wolverines will use the match for preparation of their relay and short distance runners in the outdoors. "The purpose of the meet is to start early," coach James Henry said. "We're anxious to get our throwers, sprinters and hurdlers back into action." The team took advantage of the mild weather last week to work outdoors in pre- paration for the upcoming meet. Henry looks for a combination of old and new faces to land strong performances in their respective events this weekend. Senior tri-captain and multi-event athlete Alana Davis will compete in the long jump and 400 meter hurdles. Davis finished fourth in the pentathalon in last year's Big Ten Outdoor Championships. Senior high jumper Lisa DeVries, who, Henry described as, "one of the most consistent jumpers on the team," will also look to post a strong showing after finishing third in the Big Ten Indoor Championships. First-year long jumper and sprinter Ronda Ricketts, who jumped a collegiate best 19'1" 'The purpose of the meet is to start early. We're anxious to get our throwers, sprinters and hurdlers back into action.' -James Henry Women's Track coach in the Big Ten Indoors for a fifth place finish will compete in the long jump as well as the 100 meter dash and 4 X 100 meter relay. The 4 X 100 relay team of Michele Bishop, Gillian Osborne, Dyan Jenkins and Suzette Thweat will take their school record of 47.2 seconds into the upcoming outdoor season. Henry believes that this relay team has a good chance of breaking that record tomorrow in St. Louis. Not everyone will make the trip to St. Louis though. The team wili leave its long distance runners behind to work with assistant coach Sue Foster. After this weekend's meet the team will begin preparing for the North Carolina State Invitational to take place a week from tomorrow in Raleigh, NC. r. ... That night, during halftime, intramural three-on-three basketball teams from Michigan, Michigan State, Saginaw Valley State, and Western Michigan will compete in the Schick Super Hoops Regional Championship. The four teams advanced to the championship game by finishing as the top two men's and women's teams in the regional tournament held at Michigan February 17. The men's championship pits a Western Michigan team against a Michigan State team, while the women's game features a Michigan team against a team from Saginaw Valley State. Michigan's team, which has now reached the regional four years in a row, consists of seniors Anne Marie Abundis, Nancy Sassack, Kim Edelman, and Kim Sigmund. "We want to win because it's our last year," Abundis said, "but we're also more relaxed-we're into savoring our last year and having fun at the Piston game. I feel a lot more comfortable this year because it is my fourth year and I know what to expect." Abundis described the tournament as being more competitive than in the past. "This year the regionals had 17 teams-last year they had seven," Abundis explained. She added that the competition within the University to get to the regional tournaments was also tougher than in years past. Abundis and Edelman serve as the "shooting guards" while Sassick and Sigmund, both of whom are over six feet tall, play power forward-type roles. This is the sixth season for the Schick Super Hoops tournament, and more than 200,000 students from nearly 800 colleges and universities participated this year. - From Staff Reports AP All stars to make $15.3 million in 1989 ON 0 i r.
