Wolverine Sluggers swing into Ball State by Matt Rennie Daily Baseball Writer The Michigan Daily - Friday, March 23, 1990 - Page 11 Swimmers place The winter hibernation officially ends for the Michigan baseball team this weekend in Muncie, Indiana when the Wolverines play four games with the Ball State Cardinals, a doubleheader on both Saturday and Sunday. The series with the Cardinals represents the first games for the Wolverines in the Midwest this sea- son. The team has already played in the Las Vegas Classic and made a trip to Florida, compiling a record of 7-6. Michigan's strength to this point has been pitching. While the current team ERA (3.91) is not equal to last year's mark (3.15), Michigan coach Bill Freehan has received fine per- formances from a trio of starters. Senior righthander Rick Leonard, junior lefthander Kirt Ojala, and sophomore righthander Jason Pfaff have combined for 46 and 1/3 innings in 6 starts and have a combined ERA of 1.94. Ojala is the most experienced hurler from last year's Big Ten runner-up. The southpaw, who was 3-2 last season, has been named the co-captain of this year's squad. Although he has yet to win this season, he boasts an ERA of 2.02. Sophomore Todd Marion has been shutting the door on Wolverine opponents without fail. Marion has not allowed a run in his 9 and 2/3 innings while striking out 13. Whoever is on the mound for the Wolverines will have his hands full with the Cardinals, who return 12 lettermen from last year's team that went 27-27 and finished fourth in the Mid-American Conference. Senior rightfielder Brad Stewart brings his .352 average back to the Ball State lineup. Stewart earned an honorable mention spot on the All-MAC team for his performance. "Brad's a veteran performer," Ball State coach Pat Quinn said. "He gives us an experienced bat in the number three spot." Another top returnee for the Cardinals is senior centerfielder Barry Godown. Godown played only 16 games last year after transferring from Kishwaukee Junior College. The speedster stole 18 bases during that short span and led the team in batting average, hitting .400. "Barry Godown will be a full- time performer for us in centerfield," Quinn said. "I look for him to be a very solid, very exciting centerfielder this year." Quinn has inserted last year's MAC rookie of the year Louis Williams into the starting rotation. Last season, the reliever averaged 7.2 strikeouts per nine innings. FILE PHO0TO Pitcher/first baseman Jason Pfaff follows through on his swing in a 1989 game. Pfaff looks to take on a leading role as Michigan travels to Muncie, Indiana this weekend for a four-game series against Ball State. The Wolverines have compiled a 7-6 record and the Michigan pitching staff has recorded a 3.91 ERA thus far this season.
