.Turtle Island bows e

by Michael Paul Fischer
YOU might imagine that violist
Irene Sazer would feel she had finally
sought out her niche back in 1986,
having won a chair with the Oakland
Symphony Orchestra. After all, isn't
this what all performing musicians
covet?
But for a player known to
"sneak" Stevie Wonder and Joni
Mitchell records into the house as a
youngster, the situation proved a bit
suffocating to those rougher in-
stincts itching to break out and into
the folk textures of Sazer's musical
youth and the jazz flexibility she ex-
plored back in the earlier '80s among
the Baltimore group Swing Pickens.
Fortunately, the open-minded Bay
Area scene offered Sazer a chance to
take a step back and two steps for-
ward - cutting out onto a new edge
with journeyman violinist Darol

Anger to form the Turtle Island
String Quartet, who perform tonight
at Rackham. Exemplified on their
second recording, 1989's Metropo-
lis, the group's groundbreaking ef-
forts to combine the improvisational
swing and earthy tones of jazz and
folk music with the expressive capa-
bilities of one the world's tradition-
ally most conservative ensemble
formats hasafforded Sazer and her
other bandmates - cellist Mark
Summer and violinist David Balakr-
ishnan - a singular spotlight and
resounding acclaim.
Indeed, the musical trailblazing
typified by the Turtles' recent suc-
cess has of late transformed Sazer's
unlikely aspirations into the creative
standard of once-staid genres such as
the string quartet. It may be no coin-
cidence that the unquestioned pi-
oneers of this movement, the madly
eclectic Kronos Quartet, also took

clectically
root in San Francisco's melting pot
environment. And while the Turtle
Islanders may not prove as outra-
geous as Kronos or new-edge com-
posers Philip Glass and Steve Reich,
Metropolis is just as refreshingly
successful.
Somewhere in between the knife-
edge facility of Kronos and the
sinewy, folkish grace of Jean Luc
Ponty, Anger and company imbue
the string quartet sound with a hoe-
down power and an exhilarating, un-
precendented sense of swing, powered
by cellist Summer's thrusting
manic-rhythmic countercurrents. Pat
Metheny's beguiling "Jaco" is at
turns magnificent and touching; and
while the aptly-titled "Four on the
Floor" kicks steam and takes the
open road, the arresting "Naima"
melds the craziest atonal angles of a
Webern with downsurging chunks of
See TURTLE, page 8

Turtle Island String Quartet brings its swingy jazz sound to Rackham tonight. Leader Darol Angerhasn't
seemed to spread himself too thin with his participation in a second band (Montreaux) and on countless
new agey albums.
