Page 8 - The Michigan Daily - Sports Monday - March 19, 1990 Wi'nds blow sailors eastward From Staff Reports After spring break practice at Tulane University, the Michigan sailing team sent sailors to two major East Coast regattas last weekend. Senior Debbie Hopkins sailed A Division with junior Kathy Teeple while sophomore Kim Kelly sailed B Division with senior Marya Mogk at the Naval Academy Women's Regatta. The Michigan contingent finished in 10th place out of 16 squads. Nationally, the women's team is ranked tenth and finished sixth at nationals last year. At New York's Maritime School, junior Co-Captain Ed Campaniello sailed A Division with senior Dave Milan while sophomores Ryan McLaughlin and Timothy Mackey sailed in B. The team fared well in both regattas despite the difficult transition from the boats used in practice at Tulane University to the boats used in the races. The Michigan sailing team is a' club sport that competes nationally throughout the academic year. Practice during the season is held at a sailing site on' Baseline Lake, about 20 minutes from campus, with transportation provided by the team. Any interested students, regardless of sailing experience, are encouraged to attend the sailing team mass meeting on Wednesday, March 21, 7:00 p.m. in Angell Hall (the room will be announced on flyers across campus). GOTCHER Continued from page 1 work out, but it gives me a mental edge. When I step on the mat, I know no one out there worked out harder than me." Another reason Gotcher trains so diligently is to keep his weight down. He weighs in naturally at ap- proximately 180 lbs., but wrestled for most of the season in the 150 division. He moved up to 158 after an injury sidelined Sam Amine, who was Michigan's starter at that weight. But even with the added eight pounds, the task of cutting weight still loomed arduous. "Larry's mastered cutting weight," teammate and workout partner Lanny Green said. "It's the toughest thing to do in wrestling, but he almost enjoys it." Coach Dale Bahr recognizes Gotcher's intensity as the foundation for his success. "He's just so focused on what he wants to do that he refuses to lose. His intensity has its positives and negatives, but overall, that's why he's a winner." One of the negatives that stemmed from Gotcher's attitude was an outburst that occurred at last year's NCAA tournament. He squared off against Clarion's Mike Cole in the semifinals. Several minutes into the match, the referee slapped his hand to the mat, signifying that Gotcher had been pinned. "I wasn't pinned. It wasn't even close," he later argued. Incensed, Gotcher slammed down his headgear and initiated a verbal exchange with the referee. The official penalized Michigan two team points. "I had never been pinned before in my life, not even turned," Gotcher said. "The ref took the right to say that away from me." Regarding the outburst, Gotcher maintained, "If I didn't have that attitude, I never would have gotten that far in the first place. A good loser is a loser." Is that just a cop-out rationaliza- tion? "No, it's pretty close to the truth," Bahr asserted. "Without that approach, Larry wouldn't do nearly as .well. "I mean, look at a guy like Bo Schembechler. He's got such a pas- sion for winning, so you see him ranting on the sidelines, throwing his headphones. I don't know that he would have won all those games without that intensity." As a result, many recognize that when tournament time rolls around, Gotcher responds with an uncanny knack for surviving each match. "Larry wrestles best with his back to the wall," teammate Phil Nowick said. "The NCAA is not just a question of ability, it's en- durance too, and no one can endure like he can." Gotcher carries over his endurance to other areas of his life. He maintains a 3.5 GPA in the business school, a seemingly odd complement to wrestling. "I'm a weird combination - I'm a good student and a good athlete, and that's already contradictory. I'm in the business school and I listen to Iron Maiden. I have a Grim Reaper tattoo, but I'll be wearing a suit and tie to work." However, each aspect is bound by one common denominator. "Every one of those things is in- tense - wrestling, the business school. Just getting a tattoo in the first place is intense, and then trying to go out every day in a suit and make money." Gotcher credits athletic competi- tion as being the catalyst in his life. "Wrestling has done everything for me - it's given me that attitude. If I didn't wrestle, I'd be working in a factory the rest of my life." Consider those monolithic stares that adorn his walls. They are ac- companied by countless reminders of his mission in life to succeed, most notably the self-addressed message fixed beside his alarm clock, ready to greet Gotcher every morning: Larry, Get up m-----f-----. Another thing: get straightf------ A's and a good paying f------ job. WAKE UP GET TO UGIER! It would seem that Gotcher places inordinate pressure on himself to succeed, but he does not get down on himself when he loses a match. "When I lose, the first thing I think is I could have beaten him - there's always a way I could have S, S JOSE JUAREZIDaily Michigan's Larry Gotcher tries to escape the hold of Illinois' Dan O'Brien during the Wolverines' dual meet with the Illini.
