Fashion show gives aid to incoming students REVIEW

For the first time, proceeds form
the annual ABENG fashion and tal-
ent show will go towards scholar-
ships for incoming inner-city minor-
ity students.

pha Minority Scholarship fund. Al-
pha Phi Alpha, in return, will give
the money to the Henry Ford High
School in Detroit.
"In the past years, there was no

there was actually a charge and where
the benefits were going to some type
of fund," said Patricia Davenport,
coordinator and producer of the show
which took place in a packed
Mendelssohn Theatre.
"Using the proceeds to benefit the
scholarship started off as a sugges-
tion," Davenport said. "It later be-
came an effort to give something
back to the community. I'm pretty
sure the decision was supported by
everyone or else it wouldn't have

Although Alpha Phi Alpha has
not decided how it will delegate the
money to students, Miles Reed, ed-
ucational activity director for Alpha
Phi Alpha said one possibility is
that an essay contest may be held for
the high school students and the
winners will receive the money.
Students who attended the show
supported ABENG's efforts to aid
inner-city students. Carl Banks, an
LSA Senior said, "I think it's a good
thing because those are the kids that
need the help the most. Even if it's

get their foot in the door."
Kendra Dixson, an LSA Sopho-
more who went to the show, said the

that we're in school, but we haven't
forgotten our younger brothers and
sisters who aren't as fortunate."
Although the ABENG show was
just last weekend, there is already
talk of a future fundraiser. "We
thought that since this year's
ABENG show went so well, we
would like to make it a tradition, if
possible," Washington said.

quality of the production is remark-
able given that this is the first pro-
duction by the Radio Underground
Theater Company. Most of the
Company members are students in
the theater and communications de-
partments, and they will be produc-
ing original works during the rest of
the term. Soon to be heard on the
airwaves is a cyberpunk drama. Keep
