ARTS The MichiganDaily Airplane by Brian Jarvinen Friday, March 16, 1990 alums play hot shit Page 7 SO you couldn't make it down to Landover for Phil's 50th birthday today, and you're scared the Raven just may quoth "Nevermore" regarding cer- tain famous musicians from the '60s. Well you can still feed that jones Sunday when two famous practitioners of the San Francisco sound, Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady, n6 of the Airplane and Hot Fuckin' Tuna, play an acoustic show in Dearborn. During the Jefferson Airplane->Jefferson Starship->Starshit mutations of the '70s and '80s; Jorma and Jack kept themselves busy play- ing in the classic acoustic/electric folk/blues out- fit Hot Tuna, which they initially wanted to call Hot Shit (beats me why the record company would reject that name). The adjective HOT doesn't begin to describe the intense combination of Jorma's searing leads and Jack's monstrous bass rumblings. Since the last Hot Tuna records in the '70s, Jorma has stayed busy, playing up to 200 nights a year, appearing solo, with Jack, with his brother Peter, or with reincarnations of Hot Tuna. His last releases have been solo outings on Relix Records. Of late, Jorma is anticipating returning to New York to start working on material for a new Hot Tuna album to be released on Epic next summer. "Everyone's real excited about it, I think it's going to be a lot of fun," says Jorma. "The nice thing about the studio iz not only do you have time to do it, but you can have lots of guest stars depending on what the song needs. I'd love to get David Crosby to sing on some stuff; John Sebastian is one of my neighbors and we've been writing some stuff, we'll probably get him on the album." Last summer saw the long-awaited return of the Airplane for a comeback album and tour. Re- garding the album, Jorma says he thinks "the band came together pretty well. As far as the al- bum was concerned everything was craftmansly done, as it should be, we've been doing it for 25 years. I would have liked to spend a little more time in the creative aspect but Paul and Grace's managers really wanted to rush, rush, rush and get it out. I did it and I thought it was fun, but I'm not really very interested in it." Of the tour he said, "The shows were fun but it's a different trip for me. I do a lot of shows and I'm not used to doing only 70 minutes or 80 minutes where you have all these union constraints and if you run over they charge you phenomenal amounts of money. It's really a restraining kind of art form. To tell you the truth I'd rather do what I'm doing now." JORMA KAUKONEN AND JACK CASADY appear at Sully's, 4758 Greenfield Rd in Dear- born. There are two shows, at 8 and 10 pm, tickets are $12 in advance. Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen ain't dead yet. In fact the stuff they play is very much alive. Some might even call it hot.
