Women's Basketball vs. Oklahoma St. (NCAA 1st Round) Tonight, 8:30 p.m. (WPZA 1050AM) Stillwater, OK SPORTS Men's Basketball vs. Illinois St. (NCAA 1st Round) Friday, 9 p.m. (Ch. 2) Long Beach, CA The Michigan Daily Wednesday, March 14, 1990 Page 9 'Shafted!' An inept NCAA committee leaves the Wolverines sitting at home by Peter Zellen Daily Hockey Writer Last Sunday, the Michigan hockey team defeated Bowling Green 5-4 in the CCHA consolation game to finish third in the conference playoffs. Afterwards, a number of reporters and broadcasters sat around the press lounge eating their meal and all the while discussing various team's chances to get a bid for the NCAA tournament, which starts this weekend.. The topic moved on to the Wolverine squad. "That would be insane now if Bowling Green made the tournament and Michigan didn't," one broadcaster said. Well folks, the asylum doors have flown open. The NCAA selection committee now runs rampant through the streets, allowing their foolish opinions to affect the post-season livelihoods of schools like Michigan. As coach Red Berenson so quaintly put it, the Michigan team got shafted." These four men snubbed Michigan and picked the Falcons to be the third CCHA team in the tournament of 12, much to the dismay of those who follow the maize and blue icers. One such man on the committee is Jack Parker, the coach of Boston University. Parker brought his ninth ranked Terriers into Ann Arbor in December and saw them swept, 4-3 and 6-2. At that time, Michigan was ranked tenth. When asked by reporters what this would mean to the ranking community, Parker replied, "I wouldn't worry too much about that. I should know, I'm on that selection committee." Boy, I'm glad Parker takes this so seriously. Another member of that illustrious committee was Jack UM News in The Daily 764-0552 e o y ; < = Gregory, athletic director at, well look here, Bowling Green. Nope, no bias there. None at all. No member of the committee is allowed to vote on teams in their own conference, but with these two, their influence must certainly have been felt by the other members. In the end, both Boston University and Bowling Green were given bids. Why do I imagine that these men did something so juvenile as to persuade the vote to go against Michigan just because the Wolverines beat their teams? "Sob, sob. You beat us so we don't like you anymore. Just for that we won't pick your team. Nyah, nyah." Nice to be mature about the whole thing guys. Go back to your NCAA monkey bars and swing set. It's also apparent that this committee doesn't believe in using things like logic and precedents as factors in making their decisions. Michigan beat Boston University and had a better record at 24-12-6. If the Terriers made the tournament why shouldn't the Wolverines? That would be the logical choice, wouldn't it? In February, No. 14 ranked Alaska-Anchorage came out to Ann Arbor for a two-game series and came away with a 4-1 loss and a 3-3 tie. By the way, Alaska Anchorage is in the tournament too as they will face Lake Superior State. Let's see now. The Wolverines were 3-0-1 against nationally ranked teams out of their conference. They're both in and Michigan is out. It doesn't take Rain Man to figure that one out but I hear that he was offered a seat on next years committee. The most baffling thought of all is that the aforementioned idea of precedents never influenced the committee's decision. Last year, Bowling Green finished fifth in the CCHA and had a 26-18-3 record. They skated into the playoffs and beat third place Illinois- Chicago 5-3 in the consolation game. The Falcons ended up with a NCAA bid. This year's Michigan team had a better record than last year's Bowling Green team and won the consolation game as well by a comparable score. The Wolverines also beat Bowling Green in the CCHA standings by one place. Bowling Green finished ahead of Michigan in the CCHA standings and had a 3-2 advantage over the Wolverines: This is cause enough' for bid consideration, but not over the team they lost to in the playoffs. It all boils down to who beat who last. They think that way in football. Ask Lou Holtz. Notre Dame lost the national champ- ionship simply because they lost to Miami. Why doesn't that phil- osophy apply here? Why have a consolation game at all then? It's like saying to the players "You just played in an exhausting overtime loss to the best team in the country (Michigan State). Just for fun, why don't you lace up those skates one more time." In avoiding this comparison, the committee has proven that a mind is a terrible thing to waste, except if you never started out with one. The Wolverines will not be raising anymore trophies this season, which came to an abrupt end on Sunday. The icers were snubbed by the NCAA selection committee as they were not chosen for the 12-team tournament. Invitational championship trophy as "'Men's lacrosse wins t wice From Staff Reports Hot, muggy days and rainy evenings proved to be the only competition for the Michigan men's lacrosse club as it posted big victories against Louisiana State and Rice in Baton Rouge, Louisiana over spring break. .. The first game, against LSU, proved laughable as the Wolverines dominated from start to finish in recording a 20-2 win. Leading 13-1 at halftime, coach Bob DiGiovanni pulled his starters and was able to insert the rest of the team for the remainder of the game. Despite the score, DiGiovanni was able to get his first read of what to expect from this year's team that posted a 15-2 record last season. "We looked especially strong," DiGiovanni said. "We have more good individual players this year than we've had in a long time." A few of those players are: Mike Kennedy, the team president, who is returning for his final season after leading the team in scoring last year. Kennedy scored 11 points in the two games, including five goals. First- year player Eddie Honos was the team's second leading scorer in Louisiana, posting eight points with four goals and four assists. "I think that both teams provided us with good competition for starting off the season," Kennedy said. "But even with our offensive output it was the defense that really shined." The defense is anchored by fifth- year senior goalie Rob DiGiovanni, who was again pulled after the first half of the Rice game, in which the Wolverines triumphed, 13-3. In that game, which was highlighted by torrential downpours, DiGiovanni only let up one goal and the defense showed its grit by denying the Owls a good scoring opportunity during a period in which the team played two men down. "Overall," coach DiGiovanni said, "we had a successful trip. We started to gel as a team and looked good against both teams."
