HOCKEY NOTEBOOK LSSU's Anzalone calls Berenson 'full of crap' by Mike Gill Daily Sports Editor DETROIT - The feud between Michigan coach Red Berenson and Lake Superior coach Frank Anzalone continued last Monday at the CCHA Final Four Press conference held at Joe Louis Arena. It appears that two months and several hundred miles did little to quell the animosity between the two. When Anzalone was asked to respond to a remark Berenson made in January about the Lakers clutch-and-grab style of play, Anzalone responded, "I think Red is full of crap. No more comment. I think that's bush. I think Red's bush." After Lake Superior tied and defeated Michigan on January 5-6 Berenson said, "We all try to recruit good hockey players and you get some coaches who go out and teach their kids how to nullify the good hockey...I just think their team plays a style of hockey that is not good for the quality of college hockey." Before and after the actual press conference, the two coaches kept their distance but were uncomfortably forced to sit next to each other during the meeting with the media. Anzalone, who complained to the league office about Berenson's remark, also complained Monday that the Ann Arbor ,media thinks he is "a maniac." ANZALONE LEAVING? Even though Anzalone brought a national championship to the tiny upper peninsula school, he seems less than happy at Lake Superior and is awaiting the proper job offer to jump ship. It also appears that Anzalone is having problems working with the administration. "My future plans are to stay at Lake Superior right now," Anzalone said. "I feel the best thing for me to do is to just coach as hard as I can and do the best job I can for the kids and if ever something comes along - I'll know which program is a step up for me. "Right now there are so many lateral moves that I might as well stay with the devil I know than the devil I don't know... The marriage is wearing thin due to some inner-circle things. "There comes a time when you grow and people don't grow with you. I think that the people who watch you build a program are fine. It's the people who come in after you that want to rip it down or try to change how to build it. "We've not been marketed real well. We're more interested in running a nice, tidy, neat athletic program and really, we're tidy and neat. How can anyone not control seven sports? I think anyone can run our athletic department if they had a little bit of a feel for athletics." Anzalone said he turned down offers to coach at R.P.I. and Michigan Tech, calling them "lateral moves." APATHY? The two game playoff series which put Michigan into the CCHA Final Four totaled fewer fans than the Wolverines averaged for a league game during the regular season. The Friday, March 2 game drew 2,011 and the follow up game filled 2,704 seats, totaling 4,715. In 16 league games, which did include special promotions and lower ticket prices, Yost Ice Arena averaged 5,054. "It bothers me," Berenson said of the poor playoff attendance. "We tried to advertise our playoff series more than we ever have in the past, and the interest is really casual, even though classes are out. We have a great nucleus of fans and our band all stayed but we don't have the increment of people who come to a program when they sense that it is exciting." MICHIGAN SNUBBED: Also at Monday's press conference, the 1989-90 coaches All-CCHA teams were announced with no Michigan player making the top two teams. The first team is as follows: Jason Muzzatti (Goalie; MSU), Rob Blake (Defense; BGSU), Kord Cernich (Defense; LSSU), Kip Miller (Forward; MSU), Nelson Emerson (Forward; BGSU), Craig Fisher (Forward; Miami.) Warren Sharples and Denny Felsner received honorable mention. While Berenson agreed that Blake stood out this season on defense, he had hoped Alex Roberts would also receive recognition, but thought that the senior co-captain's tough-guy reputation worked against him to receive the honor. "That's the price you pay when you're an aggressive player," Berenson said. "A lot of coaches don't like a guy like that on the other team but you like him when he's on your team. He's come a long way, you would like to have seen him get the recognition." Michigan's excellent play on Sunday was also noted by Bowling Green junior defenseman Rob Blake. "Give Michigan credit - they played well and they beat us tonight." Playing well and beating Bowling Green was exactly the cure Michigan needed to overcome the blues that set in after the loss to MSU. The Wolverines found themselves surrounded with adversity on all sides, but pulled through with flying colors. 'Everybody was down. To come up short hurt. But we had to find a way to forget about last night's game and play and we did just that.' - Mike Moes Michigan captain The pressure on Michigan was to finish ahead of Bowling Green and ironically, the two faced one another in the consolation game. Though the Wolverines have not yet officially received an NCAA bid, they should expect to receive one tonight. Overcoming exhaustion and emotions from the night before, Michigan displayed that it is one of the top 12 teams in the nation. lead, only 1:05 into Sunday's game. and we did ju BGSU Continued from page 1 Felsner's goal was particularly fancy as he took the puck from mid-ice, skated past the defenseman and shot one-handed for the score. Felsner scored two goals and two assists while Ouimet had four assists "When all three of us are playing well the line clicks," Roberts said. "It's like a machine, if one thing breaks then it doesn't work as well." The key to the victory came as the Falcons started the third period with a five-on-three power play as Moes was called for roughing at 20:00 of the second period and then an unknown bench penalty was called soon after. The Wolverines successfully killed off that penalty and Michigan knew that victory was more than possible as their lead remained 5-3. "That was a big kill and it may have been the turning point in the game," Berenson said. "We hope this victory will allow us to move on (to the tournament.) Looking ahead of the big picture we knew we had to finish ahead of Bowling Green. Roberts named Rookie of the Year DETROIT - Michigan left wing David Roberts has been named CCHA Rookie-of-the-Year by a vote of the league's coaches. The announcement was made at the CCHA banquet held in Detroit on Friday. Entering this weekend's games, Roberts had totalled 51 points with 19 goals and 32 assists. Roberts is the cousin of captain Alex Roberts and the son of former MSU All-American Doug Roberts. - Mike Gill 10' _ Brown Felsner said as he described the point. One absence for the Wolverines during the Michigan State game was solid play from CCHA Rookie-of-the-Year David Roberts, who was held scoreless. Roberts had taken a measles shot before the game Saturday and was not able to skate well because of stomach pains. However, his health returned against Bowling Green and he notched two goals. In fact, the entire line of Roberts, Mark Ouimet, and Felsner did much better in the consolation game than they did against the Spartans as they combined for 10 LA4 For Exam Preparation Choose to EXCEL! -Learn to Anticipate the Exam -Improve Your Test-Taking Skills -Use Your Study Time More Effectively -Achieve Your Maximum Potential Score ONANY 10 E, E I . 996-1500 Test Preparation 1100 South University hI FORBIDDEN FORTUNE $30,000.00 PER MONTH EVERY MONTH!
