Expectations and energy are high as the Wolverines defend their title in the Big Ten Swimming and Diving Championships beginning this afternoon at Canham Natatorium. Co-captain Brent Lang said, "the team is excited and ready to roll, we want to build excitement and try to dominate from the beginning." In other words, the team's goal is to repeat last year's performance. Behind a strong all-around team effort, the tankers finished 182 points ahead of second place Iowa. Michigan expects most of its competition to come from the likes of Iowa, Indiana and Minnesota. Iowa senior Arthur Wojdat, who finished two seconds ahead of Lang last year, will be defending his 200 yard freestyle crown. Minnesota senior Sean Quackenbush will also be attracting attention in the 200 yard butterfly. Michigan, ranked 5th in the country, is undefeated in the Big Ten this year and is 13-2 overall, suffering setbacks only to USC and UCLA early in the year. The team has the potential to qualify 12 swimmers and divers for the NCAA Championships later in March. "The NCAAs are on a lot of the senior's minds, we need strong performances from our freshman in the Big Tens," Lang said. Lang added that one of the keys to victory is "strong performances in the 400 and 800 yard relays." Sophomore all- American Eric Bailey will pace the 400 yard relay. Michigan hopes it can give the same strong home performance as the team did in January in defeating the then top ranked Stanford Cardinal. A Big Ten champion- ship would round out a clean sweep for the fourth consecutive year in which the men and women have shared the title of champions. The championships will last for three days, starting today at noon and ending Saturday night. Preliminaries will be held each of the three days at noon, and daily finals will be held at 7 pm. The Wolverines (4-4 overall, 1-3 Big Ten) are underdogs against the powerful Minnesota squad, but with steadily improving all-around scores in the last few weeks, the team can't be dismissed. The squad has shown tremendous fortitude by being able to continue their upward climb, despite the loss of junior Christine Furlong ,,who suffered a severe neck injury three weeks ago. Replacements Kim Crocker and Tiffany Kinaia have picked up much of the slack. "The experience that they gain from these meets is something they need to do," assistant coach Dave Kazara said. "Michigan women's to Illinois State due to the hazardous weather. Michigan is facing a Minnesota team that placed four gymnasts on the all-Big Ten team last year, all of whom have returned this season. Senior Marie Roethlisberger won the Big Ten all-around competition last year with a combined point total of 38.20, as well as setting a Minnesota school record at the NCAA Central Regional Championships with a score of 38.75. "Nobody is out of our reach," Michigan head coach Beverly Fry said. "When it comes down to the Big Ten Championships (in late March), our kids are going to be hungry."
